Wrestlers sweep in Coffeyville

COFFEYVILLE -- Fort Scott High School's wrestling team swept a Southeast Kansas League triangular here Tuesday night, then were still able to get home in time to enjoy the second half of the boys' basketball game at the FSHS gymnasium.

The Tigers (2-1 SEK, 7-6 in all duals) beat Parsons, 70-48, then took care of host Coffeyville, 66-49.

The scores of the matches are somewhat deceptive. Twelve of the 28 bouts were double forfeits, which give both teams six points. Another seven were forfeits given by one team to the other. Coffeyville has a small pool of wrestlers out this season and wasn't able to put an opponent on the mat until the 171-pound match of its dual.

The Tigers won each of the six matches that were held in the Parsons dual, five of them by pin. Parsons' only win came from forfeits at 215 and 285.

Denzell Davis (119 pounds), Justin Sharp (125) and Levi Tweedy (130) pinned their opponents and Michael Durossette (135) scored a major decision, 15-1, over Joe Brewington to give the Tigers a 34-12 lead over Parsons.

Blake Cowen (160) and Kyle Slattery (171) also recorded pins for the Tigers.

Tweedy, Durossette, Alec Ramirez (145), and Dane Cummings (160) all received forfeit wins in the Coffeyville match. Then Blake Cowen wrestled at 171 and pinned Curtis Bolden in 17 seconds.

The last three matches were Coffeyville wins: a decision at 189, a major decision at 215 and a forfeit at 285.

The Tigers will take part in the Paola Tournament Saturday. Then they will be at home Jan. 29 for a league triangular with Independence and Labette County. Parent's Night activities will be held as it will be the last home appearance for Fort Scott's team this season and in the career of the Tiger seniors.
