'Hound men split at State Fair; women swept

SEDALIA, Mo. -- Fort Scott Community College's men's basketball team split its pair of games in a classic hosted by State Fair here over the weekend while Greyhound women were swept .

The men (3-4) lost to host State Fair Friday night, 87-60, but came back on Saturday to beat Moberly Area (Mo.) by an 81-73 score.

Fort Scott's women (3-3) lost to Three Rivers, 80-74, Friday night and to State Fair, 59-58, Saturday.

Friday: State Fair 87, Fort Scott men 60.

Fort Scott shot 49 percent from the field, making 22 of 45 field-goal attempts but were credited with fewer than 20 rebounds in the game.

According to the stats turned in to the Jayhawk Conference, State Fair outrebounded the Greyhounds 34-18. This would be because they were said to have made 35 of 41 shots from the field in the contest. If so, that's an astounding 85 percent.

Kirklin Bohanon led Fort Scott with 18 points while Conrad Brown added 12 and Bryce Kemp chipped in with 10.

Friday: Three Rivers 80, Fort Scott women 74.

Valencia Kelly scored 21 points for the Greyhounds, who led 34-32 at halftime. Leondra Doomes-Stephens added 16 points while Monet Fernandes scored 14 and hauled down 11 rebounds.

The Greyhounds ourebounded Three Rivers 36-31 and shot 40 percent from the field as they made 22 of 55 field-goal attempts.

Three Rivers shot 44 percent on 30 of 69 and picked up 13 steals.

Saturday: Fort Scott men 81, Moberly Area 83.

Bohanon's 24 points aided the Greyhounds, who made 52 percent of their field-goal attempts on 26 of 50 and also made 24 of 42 free-throw attempts.

Moberly Area, which committed 27 fouls, shot only 44 percent from the field on 28 of 63 and made only eight of 21 charity tosses.

Darrell Blanton added 21 points to the Greyhound attack while Bryce Kemp scored 13 and also hauled down 11 rebounds.

Saturday: State Fair 59, Fort Scott 58.

The Greyhounds surrendered a 35-18 halftime lead and ended up with the loss despite shooting 57 percent from the field on 25 of 44 and committing only seven turnovers.

State Fair shot only 38 percent on 25 of 66 and coughed up the ball 21 times but controlled the boards for a 36-25 advantage.

Doomes-Stephens led Fort Scott with 24 points, seven steals and nine rebounds. Shadara Hampton added 14 points.

Fort Scott's men have the entire week off. They won't play again until the Jayhawk Conference Shootout at Coffeyville on Dec. 5 and 6.

Fort Scott's women play three times in four days beginning Wednesday night at Northern Oklahoma-Tonkawa. Friday and Saturday, they'll play in a four-team classic at Pratt.
