Tigers 10th at State golf
CHENEY -- Fort Scott High School's golf team finished 10th out of the 12 teams that took part in the Class 4A State Golf Tournament here Monday.
The Tigers shot 435 as a team, which placed them ahead of both of the other qualifiers from their Regional, Columbus (445) and Anderson County (454).
"We didn't place as hope as we hoped to, but we do take pride in beating Columbus again and also beating our Regional champion by a large margin," Fort Scott head coach Karen Curran said. " And we were only 4 strokes off of the score that we shot at regionals, on a much more difficult course and under much more stressful weather conditions. So even though we didn't have the success at State we were hoping for, we finished off the season in a way that we can be very proud of."
Senior Cassie Ogran finished with Fort Scott's best individual score, a 51-51--102, which tied for 31st in the field.
"She struggled at times, just like everyone else did," Curran said, "but was still able to end her career on a pretty positive experience."
Sophomore Kacie Brown finished with a score of 50-56--106, which tied for 36th.
"The best thing about State for Kacie, is the fact that she's only a sophomore and this was a great learning experience for her," Curran said. "She now knows what it takes to make it back there and have a chance to place in the top 20 to earn All-State.
Senior Dana Ballow followed with 55-57--112. Katie Bristley scored 64-51--115. Shebly Blackburn finished with 69-70--139 and Morgan Morasch shot 69-81--150. All but Blackburn, who is a junior, are seniors.
Topeka Hayden won its first State girls' golf title with a score of 354. Andover, which had won each of the past four Class 4-3-2-1A titles, was second at 372.
Falley of Hayden was the individual champ with a score of 39-40--79.
This was the first year that Class 4A State was held apart from 3-2-1A .
