Tiger junior varsity golfers fare well at Uniontown varsity meet

MORAN -- Fort Scott High School girls' golf coach Karen Curran sent her junior varsity golfers to Uniontown's 18-hole varsity invitational here Monday and was pleased when one of them, Riley Wunderly, earned a medal.

"Very proud of the job that Riley did at her first varsity tournament," Curran said. "She was eighth-place medalist and shot her new career lows of 56 (front nine) and 53 (back) for a really good 18-hole score of 109."

The schools attending were mostly smaller Class 4A and 3A varsity teams. The only other school to send JV golfers was Girard.

The Tigers shot 551 as a team to finish seventh in the eight-team field. Caney Valley was the tourney winner with a 428 followed by Anderson County with a 441 and Girard's JV with a 484.

Host Uniontown finished sixth with a score of 543. Bethany Ericson posted the team's best score of 57-58--115, which was 12th. Emily Simpson tied for 26th at 62-69--131. Veronica Harrison finished at 73-71--144, Emily Pulliam shot 76-77--153 and Raven Hixson came in at 78-80--158.

Because this was a varsity-level tournament, Curran also brought Shelby Blackburn here to make up a date she missed earlier in the season.

"Shelby also did well," Curran said. "Her first nine holes were a little better than the second nine, but she did shoot her career low for 18 holes."

Blackburn finished at 59-66--125 to tie for 21st place. Her front nine score tied her career best and her total score was a personal low. Hayley Kruse shot 78-79--157 and Reanda Simmons-Mims finished at 79-81--160 as they took part in their first 18-hole meets.

"Hayley was also able to shoot a little better than her average and had some really good shots throughout the day," Curran said. "Reanda played steady just like she always does. She also had some great shots and putts. They've improved so much throughout the season and it's just too bad that today was the last tournament for them. I think they've learned to enjoy the game and will continue to play into their adult lives."

Though the Tiger JV schedule has concluded, the varsity goes on to Columbus Thursday. Uniontown's golfers will go to Pomona-West Franklin Monday.
