Friends, neighbors help celebrate 88th birthday

Although September 4 was the real birthdate of Wanda Norris, on Tuesday, Sept. 2, several of her friends gathered in her home at the noon hour to celebrate her 88th birthday. She chose Tuesday because her quilting friends are in town that day.
Neighbor Terry Bright brought the decorated cake and ice Cream that were served by her neighbor from across the street, Marsha Harris. The quilter friends that day were Alice Townsend from Fort Scott, Carole Garrison and Lilly Coonrod. Mary Lee Payne, her south side neighbor, Ava Mae Adams from the country and Mary V. Shead from down the street, all enjoyed an hour of fellowship, opening gifts and reading special cards, one was even a musical card. Cake was sent to several friends in their homes.
To top off the hour, Bob Adams came with his camera and took pictures of thequeen for the day. She was wearing special make-up, a purple head piece and jewelry, all done by Ava Mae. As all sang the birthday song, they wished Wanda many more.
Recent visitors in Mae Watt's home this past week were Mike and Candy Bradley from Ohio who were on their vacation. Wayne Barnard, from near Topeka, visited Mae while he was in this area for his Dad's funeral. Lawrence Barnard was buried in Sheffield Cemetery, Tuesday, September 2, 2008.
Patty and Gary Peterson have returned home after visiting her brother in Coldwater, Kan., and going on to Colorado where they met others from Patty's High School graduation Class for a reunion in the mountain home of one family for several days. The Petersons enjoyed the traveling and sight seeing along the way.
Bill, Delton Jr. and Tom Watt played golf in a 3-man Scramble tournament in Carnie Mo. It was a memorial for friend Mike Schlie, 64, who died of cancer. The revenue went to Hospice in the amount of over $800. At a later date, Tom and Phyllis Watt went from their home in Lees' Summit, Mo., to attend church with Billi and Delton Watt Jr. and Joseph in Fayette, Mo.
In spite of the rainy day, a good crowd showed up for the Community gospel Singing on Saturday evening, September 6, in the Arcadia Community Center. According to the Old Settlers' Festival calendar, on Sunday, September 14, there will be Sunday Service in the Park at 11 a.m., and Gospel Sing from 4-6 p.m., in the Community Center.
Allen and Linda Watt of Wichita, announce the birth of their granddaughter, Gabriella Elizabeth Schwelling, born August 28, 2008, in Winfield, Kan. Parents are Andy and Stephanie Schwelling. The baby has a brother, Michael Levi and a sister, Kyleigh Ann.
Grandparents Day was special this year in Arcadia Christian Church with 40 in attendance for Sunday School, Worship Hour and the Church dinner. In the youth class was Josie Bryant, with two of her nieces, Brigrra and Alyssa Ware from Arma. Cheyenne Mellon again baked and brought cup cakes for all. Others were Mandy Treuino, Skye Montayna and Courtney Hencey. Patty Peterson is their regular teacher.

Special speaker, Ralph Shead and wife Cindy, who in the skit was known at Lucinda from Southern Chile, told of their work at Learning and Teaching Ministry (LATM) in Joplin, Mo. They had a table displaying pictures and books their company is translataing and printing.
Pastor David Peterson read the Call to Worship from Malachi 3:1-5. He will be speaking in Arma Care Center at 3 p.m., Sept. 14.
