Brass Quintet to perform at St. John's Methodist Church
Area music lovers are invited to St. John's United Methodist Church, 223 S. Little, on Sunday for a one of a kind musical performance.
At 2 p.m. Sunday, Brass Art, a Chanute, Kan. based brass quintet, will perform for area residents during the church's second August Music Fest. The concert is free to the general public.
According to quintet member and trombone player Sean Stewart, the instrumental group will be performing musical pieces from Broadway shows, and jazz numbers for event attendees. Stewart, a former Fort Scott resident who now owns his own American Family Insurance agency in Chanute, has been playing the trombone since fifth grade.
Jack Suit, Brass Art's tuba player, has been performing music since grade school. Through the years, Suit has performed vocally, and has also played the clarinet and bassoon. He also took piano, guitar, banjo, and tuba lessons. Currently, Suit operates his own dentistry office in Chanute.
Retired high school and middle school band director Herb Correll plays the trumpet for Brass Art. Correll served in the U.S. Army at Fort Gordon, Ga. During that time, he was the drum major for the 434th Army Band.
Larry Jones, a native of Humboldt, Kan., also plays the trumpet for the ensemble. Jones has played in various bands, including dance bands, brass quintets, civic orchestras, pit orchestras and community bands.
When Mark Harms, Brass Art's French horn player, is not creating music, he works as a physician's assistant at the Ashley Clinic in Chanute.
During the Sunday performance, attendees will have the opportunity to listen to other musical performances, which include some choir music, family vocals and other instrumentals, according to Del Potter, the coordinator of the August Music Fest.
"We have some really good musicians," Potter said.
Stewart said last year's event was enjoyable as he was impressed with the other groups who performed during the concert.
According to Potter, refreshments will be provided after the concert.
