At approximately 7 p.m. Thursday, Fort Scott emergency personnel were dispatched to the area of 1134 E. Wall St. for a two-car accident.

Once on scene officers and paramedics found Samantha Shadden, 31, Fort Scott, who was driving a green Ford Aerostar minivan, with apparent injuries, reported Fort Scott Police Officer Adrian Doherty.

The driver of the second vehicle, Jerry Wright, 20, Fort Scott, was driving a white Mercury Mountaineer SUV did not report any injuries.

Doherty said the accident occurred when Shadden attempted to exit the Phillips 66 gas station and struck Wright, who was traveling West on Wall Street.

No citations were issued at the scene due to Shadden's injuries. However, Doherty did say Shadden was believed to be at fault. He said she would likely be cited for failure to yield.

Officers on scene said it was unclear if Shadden was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident, but Sheriff's Deputy Mike Feagan said she was not wearing a restraint when he arrived on the scene.

Wright reported that he was wearing a seatbelt and told officers he was thankful for it.

"If I hadn't been wearing one (seatbelt), my head would have gone right through the windshield," he said.
