Fort Scott boys second, girls third at SEK Relays

IOLA, Kan. -- Fort Scott High School's boys finished as the runner-up to Pittsburg at the Southeast Kansas League Relays here Thursday night while the Tiger girls team was third behind winner Chanute and runner-up Iola.

Chanute's girls' title was its first in over 30 years. The Blue Comets won the first three SEK championships in 1974 (an unofficial title), 1975 and 1976. Pittsburg boys won for the second time in three years, reclaiming the title from Chanute.

Pittsburg boys scored 146 points, the most by a league champion since Fort Scott scored 156 in 2003. Fort Scott followed with 89 points while Chanute was third with 80. Chanute's girls finished with 103 points while Iola scored 86 1/2. The Tigers were only 1/2 point behind Iola.

Brieanna Jones once again won multiple events. She was the winner of the 200-meter dash, the 400 meters, triple jump and also a member of the winning 4x400-meter relay team with Ashley Cavin, Jolee Sharp and Kori Page Rienbolt.

Fort Scott's only event winner was Grant Hartman in javelin, who recorded a mark of 177 feet, 10 inches in winning over teammate Clint Lawrence, who went 156 feet, 11 inches.

Lawrence was also second in shot put and discus for Fort Scott's boys. Alex Barner took second in high jump.

Annie Gladbach had a second-place finish in javelin for Tiger girls. Elizabeth Meech was second in shot put.

Mitchell Stoughton had a third-place finish for Fort Scott's boys in the 100-meter dash while Brandon Boyd was third in the 200. Jake Clements was third in the high jump. Fort Scott's 4x100- and 4x400-meter relay teams also recorded third-place finishes.

Cavin had the girls' only third-place finish, in the long jump.

Other boys' medalists:

* Josh Buller was fourth in the 1,600 meters and seventh in the 800.

* Clements took fourth in the long jump.

* Fort Scott's 4x800-meter relay team was fourth.

* Stoughton was seventh in the 400 meters.

* Luke Halsey was eighth in the 100 and 200 meters .

* Jordan Karleskint took sixth in the 800 meters.

* Boyd placed seventh in high jump and long jump.

* Chris Archie placed seventh in pole vault.

More girls medalists:

* Catherine Sercer was fourth in the 3,200 meters.

* Brittany Bingesser was fifth in the 300-meter hurdles and eighth in the 100-meter hurdles.

* Daisy Jones took fifth in the 800-meter run and sixth in the 1,600.

* Cassie Ogran finished fifth in shot put.

* Cavin, Caitlin Shorter, Rienbolt and Sharp combined to take fifth in the 4x100-meter relay.

* Libby Halsey, Kaylie Harper, Katelyn Torres, Megan McDermed were sixth as the 4x800-meter relay team.

* Sharp placed seventh in high jump.

* Halsey was eighth in the 800.

* Kelsey Parsons placed eighth in pole vault.

* McDermed was eighth in javelin.

Fort Scott's teams will take part in the Ottawa Class 4A Regional Meet Friday.
