Region VI Baseball First-Round Playoff Series

Dodge City at Fort Scott

Saturday doubleheader, 1 p.m.; Sunday, if necessary, 1 p.m., Lions Field

Records and seeds: Dodge City is the No. 6 seed out of the Jayhawk Conference-Western Division and has a 21-34 record. Fort Scott is the No. 3 seed from the Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division and has a 35-18 record.

Last time out: Dodge City was swept in a four-game series at Butler last weekend. Fort Scott split at Independence Sunday afternoon.

Common opponents: Dodge City has not played an Eastern Division team this season. Likewise, Fort Scott has not played anyone from the West. However, the teams do have common opponents. Dodge City was 0-2 against Iowa Western and 0-1 against Des Moines Area (Iowa) Fort Scott was 0-1 against Iowa Western and 1-1 vs. DMACC.

Last year's first round: Dodge City was the No. 7 seed from the West but defeated Kansas City Kansas two games to one. Fort Scott was the No. 6 seed from the East but defeated Colby two games to one.

Rankings: Neither team is ranked by the NJCAA.

Some of the differences: This is a best-of-three series, with the higher seed hosting all three games. The first two games will be played Saturday as a doubleheader while the third game, if it's needed, will be played on its own on Sunday....In the post-season, all games are nine innings. This is different from the regular season where doubleheader games are seven innings and single games can be either seven or nine innings....

On the record: Fort Scott's 16-game winning streak that ended over the weekend was certainly the difference between hosting and going on the road again in the first round. The irony about home field is that the 'Hounds had it two years ago but lost to Seward County in three games while Colby had it last year and lost to Fort Scott in three. Also, Dodge City was a road winner last season.....Fort Scott is 15-6 at home this year....

Working like dogs (after all, they're Greyhounds): Jason Houston (Fr., Kansas City, Mo.) leads the Greyhounds with a .408 batting average and 60 hits. He also has 12 doubles, three home runs and 23 stolen bases...Trevor Geist (Soph., Loveland, Colo.) leads in home runs with nine, doubles with 14 and runs batted in with 41. He's batting .379, second on the team, and has 10 steals....Zach Caldwell (Soph., Pittsburg) leads in stolen bases with 40. He is hitting .370 with 11 doubles, 5 HR and 27 RBI...Brandt Barnes (Soph., Bentonville, Ark.) is second in steals with 29. He's batting .311 with eight doubles, 2 HR and 22 RBI....Dan Huff (Soph., Castle Rock, Colo.) is 7-0 with a 2.08 earned run average. He leads the staff with 44 strikeouts and hasn't allowed a home run this season....Ryan Daniel (Soph., Fort Collins, Colo.) is 6-4 with a 3.79 ERA and 41 strikeouts. When he pitches, he is also his own designated hitter, which can be done under college rules. As a batter, he's hitting .333 with 4 HR and 27 RBI....Chris Miles (Fr., Brookings, S.D.) is 4-0 with a 2.37 ERA....You could say the Greyhounds have a closer by committee as four players have recorded a save this season. Left-hander Garret Woerman (Soph., Wamego) has four saves to lead the staff. He also has an ERA of 1.95....Geist has also done some closing recently and has picked up a win and two saves. He has struck out 21 batters in 37 innings....
