Shirley Jean Bates Sciortino, 82, of New York, formerly of Fort Scott, died April 12, 2008 in New York City. She was born July 3, 1925 in Fort Scott, Kansas, the daughter of G. Daniel and Alta Mae Bates. She married Lew Sciortino in 1945. They later divorced in 1974.

She attended Fort Scott schools, and graduated from Fort Scott High School with the class of 1942. She worked for many years at the Western Insurance Company in Fort Scott. She moved to Johnson County, Kansas, then Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and finally New York City, to be with her daughter and family.

Shirley is survived by a daughter; Christi Fowler and her husband Dennis of New York, New York, two grandsons; Ryan Fowler of Kansas City, and Colin Fowler and his wife Lauren of New York. She was preceded in death by a son, Dan Sciortino who died in 1972 at age 16, and her parents.

At Shirley's request, her body was cremated. The family will hold private memorial services after Memorial Day in Fort Scott, Kansas.
