Eagles win in bottom of 7th
UNIONTOWN -- Uniontown played its first home softball games here Wednesday, a make-up of last Thursday's scheduled game at St. Paul, and won for the first time in the program's month-long history by a 7-6 score in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The game was moved to Uniontown's field because St. Paul's wasn't playable, according to Eagle head coach Alan Shinn.
Shinn also said his team dedicated the game to Breanna Esslinger, who is in the hospital with what he called "serious health problems."
"We're going to award a game ball to her," Shinn said.
Eight Uniontown starters had at least one hit. Diana Ayers had four, including a double and a triple. Heather Schnichels had a double as one of her three hits. Julea Decker had two singles. Candice Clayton, Jessie Camac, Rayma Ridge, Lacey Page and Ithaca Marlier also had base hits for the Eagles.
Alison Warren allowed eight hits but also only walked one batter and struck out seven as she pitched all seven innings.
"It was nice to get into the win column," Shinn said. "All in all, we played better both offensively and defensively than we did two weeks ago."
The Uniontown junior varsity lost their game 7-0. St. Paul has only 14 players out for softball, so some of the Indians' players in this game were varsity players.
With the win, Uniontown improves to 1-2. They will play the Fort Scott junior varsity today at 4:30 at Fort Scott's Don Hewett Field. Monday, they will face rival Marmaton Valley in a doubleheader at Moran. The first game there will begin at 3:30.
