'Hounds get one in and win

Wednesday, April 9, 2008

Fort Scott Community College and Independence beat Wednesday's thunderstorm long enough to get in one game of a scheduled Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division doubleheader at Lions Field Wednesday afternoon.

"It was nice to win one of those at the end," Fort Scott head coach Chris Moddelmog said. "We haven't done that in a while."

The second game had started and Fort Scott was leading 3-1 in the third inning when it was called.

The game was one of those see-saw affairs with the visiting Pirates (10-11 in the East, 15-17 overall) jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning.

Fort Scott (12-9, 22-16) scored once in the third, then tied it on Zach Caldwell's two-run home run in the fifth.

Indy reclaimed the lead with a run in the top of the seventh to go ahead 4-3.

Mitch Vielhauer, Fort Scott's designated hitter, singled to get on base to lead off the bottom of the seventh. Caldwell beat out a bunt for a hit and Cullen Baxter's sacrifice bunt advanced the runners.

Jason Houston was intentionally walked to bring up a force-out situation at any base. But Trevor Geist smacked a single up the middle to score Vielhauer and Caldwell with the tying and winning runs.

Caldwell was two for four with two RBI's and scored twice for the Greyhounds. Geist also drove in two runs and Vielhauer was two for two while scoring twice.

Trent Owens was three for four at the plate for Independence. Steffon Williams was two for three.

Dan Huff was the winning pitcher, going the distance for the 'Hounds. He allowed nine hits and three walks while striking out two.

Weather permitting, FSCC is scheduled to travel to Highland to take on the Scotties (6-18, 7-26-1), who are in ninth-place in the 10-team division. Saturday, a day which has a 30-percent chance of showers in the forecast, the 'Hounds are set to go to Parsons to take on last-place Labette (3-15, 9-18).

The Greyhounds added a half-game to their lead over Allen County (12-10, 19-15) for fourth place in the East. The top four teams in the final standings get to host one of the bottom four qualifiers from the Western Division in the first round of the Region VI Tournament.

Allen was to have played at East leader Cowley Wednesday afternoon at Arkansas City. However, that city was doused by even more rain -- over an inch -- than Fort Scott was, so it's doubtful the teams were able to complete a game in their scheduled doubleheader.

Allen County hosts Neosho County today, weather permitting, and travels to Independence Saturday.
