'Hound baseball to try again Sunday

Friday, February 22, 2008

Saturday was going to be the third attempt by Fort Scott Community College's baseball team to get its season underway.

And, like the first two attempts, bad weather has caused that to be called off. However, FSCC head coach Chris Moddelmog hopes that with the aid of some ice-melting sunshine, the Greyhounds will be able to open their season Sunday at Lions Field.

Iowa Central and Hutchinson are both visiting Fort Scott to play what amounts to a baseball triangular. Saturday's schedule will now be played on Sunday with Iowa Central facing Hutch first at 10 a.m. Fort Scott will play Hutch at about 1 p.m. and Carl Albert at about 4 p.m.

The original Sunday schedule is now set for Monday. Iowa Central and Hutch will square off again at 10 a.m. Fort Scott and Iowa Central will follow with Fort Scott and Hutchinson wrapping things up.

Fort Scott was going to open its season last Saturday against Carl Albert State (Okla.). When the teams couldn't play on that day, they agreed to try again Thursday. However, those games were cancelled on Wednesday once it became clear that the forecast wasn't favorable.

The infield at Lions Field is covered with a tarp, so it will be dry once it comes off. How the outfield will play is another question.

If you're a Greyhound baseball fan, you should keep your fingers crossed. Although it supposed to be partly sunny and relatively warm on Sunday, rain is expected late in the day on Saturday and thunderstorms are in the forecast for Monday.

Baseball isn't the only sport that's been affected by weather. Fort Scott Community College's softball team was also hoping to open its season last weekend at a two-day tournament in Fort Worth, Texas, with about five other Jayhawk Conference teams. But the entire tournament was cancelled due to inclement weather.

The Greyhounds then scheduled Independence for a non-conference doubleheader at the Betty Ruth Willard Complex for Saturday but bad weather dashed those plans.

Fort Scott will try again this weekend, although it's not likely a Saturday doubleheader at Independence will be played because the field there may not be able to recover in time. But the Greyhounds are also set to play Iowa Central -- which chose a bad week to make a tour of Kansas schools -- in a noon twinbill on Sunday at the BRWC.

If, for some reason, neither of those doubleheaders are played, FSCC softball is scheduled to play at Neosho County on March 1 and at home against Allen County on March 4.
