Williams, Kinnie combine for 53 points in loss
Arsenio Williams and Brandon Kinnie combined to score 53 points for Fort Scott Community College's men at Arnold Arena Wednesday night.
Unfortunately for the Greyhounds, the rest of the team produced only 10 points -- and just two in the second half -- and visiting Johnson County, with it's more-balanced attack, came away with a 75-63 victory in Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division play.
Williams scored 32 points for the 'Hounds while Kinnie added 21. The duo combined to make 21 of 38 field-goal attempts while the other five who played went just four of 15 -- 0 for seven in the second half.
Johnson County (9-7 in the East, 17-11 overall) saw Quintin Totta score 18 points, Johnathan Jackson 14 and Melvin Cole 13. No other Greyhound had more than three points but the Cavaliers had no one with less than six among those who scored.
Fort Scott (1-14, 6-21) has lost nine straight games and 15 of its last 16. The one team they've beaten since mid-December, Labette, happens to be their next opponent. That game will tip off at 7 p.m. Saturday night in Parsons.
The Greyhounds led a few times early but never by more than two. Willie Bland gave Fort Scott what turned out to be its last lead of the game, 15-14, with 12:30 left in the first half before the Cavaliers held the 'Hounds without a field goal during a 6 1/2-minute stretch as they took a 30-20 lead with 4:43 left in the half.
Fort Scott scored six of the final eight points of the half in getting back within 37-31 at the break on Williams' transition basket with 30 seconds to go.
The Cavs couldn't quite get enough going to put the 'Hounds away in the early going of the second half despite the fact that they managed to hold Williams scoreless in the first 7 1/2 minutes. Kinnie, who scored 13 of Fort Scott's first 18 second-half points, did enough to keep the 'Hounds within 52-49 with 10:32 remaining in the game. However, Kinnie's transition layup at that time turned out to be his last score of the night.
Williams scored Fort Scott's final 14 points but couldn't keep the 'Hounds in it by himself. Johnson County used a 13-3 run to finally get some cushion, taking the lead to 73-58 with 2 1/2 minutes to go.
For the evening, Fort Scott shot 47 percent from the field on 25 of 53 while Johnson County shot 49 percent on 30 of 64. Williams had 16 rebounds as he led the Greyhounds to a 31-27 advantage on the boards. Kolby Hopkins finished with three steals. Hopkins, Kyle Grant and Brandon Dougherty each dished two assists.
