Short-handed 'Hounds drop fourth straight

KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- Fort Scott Community College's women, using only six of their seven players for most of the game, dropped their fourth straight game as they took a 67-61 loss to Kansas City Kansas in Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division play at the KCKCC Fieldhouse here Wednesday.

The Greyhounds (3-6 in the East, 10-8 overall) were plagued by fouls and turnovers. Kansas City overcame 31-percent field-goal shooting on 27 of 67 -- which included one-of-17 three-point inaccuracy -- by going 24 of 35 at the free-throw line. Fort Scott's 21 turnovers, compared to KCK's 16, also didn't help matters.

The 'Hounds trailed by just one point, 32-31, at the half.

Kenya Doss led Fort Scott with 18 points while Amber Bowles added 12 and Leonda Doomes-Stephens scored 10.

Anne Borgertpoepping, easily owner of the longest last name in the conference, scored 20 points for the Blue Devils (4-5, 12-9). Vashunta Johnston added 17 points while Alexa McGregory had 11.

Fort Scott shot 39 percent from the field in the contest as it made 26 of 67 field-goal tries. The 'Hounds got to the free-throw line just nine times, making five.

Rebounds were even at 48-48. Fatima Lawrence had a career-best 12 boards for the Greyhounds. Bowles had nine rebounds.

The Greyhounds begin the second time through the conference schedule Saturday afternoon when Coffeyville comes to Arnold Arena for a 2 p.m. tip-off. The Red Ravens (8-1, 14-7) upset No. 16 Labette Wednesday night, 71-59, and were 93-67 victors over FSCC on Jan. 5.
