Olsen's effort too much for 'Hounds
Dana Olsen, the leading scorer in the Jayhawk Conference, exceeded her season average in the first half of Eastern Division play Wednesday night at Arnold Arena as she led her Labette squad, ranked No. 21 in the NJCAA Division I poll, to a 92-75 win over Fort Scott Community College.
Olsen was averaging 25.2 points a game coming into the contest, but scored 28 in the first half alone. She would go on to finish with 38, playing much fewer minutes in the second half.
Fort Scott (3-4 in the East, 10-6 overall) found itself down 55-32 at halftime after shooting only 29 percent from the field on eight of 28 and committing 13 turnovers. Labette (7-0, 17-2) shot 56 percent on 19 of 34 and turned the ball over just twice.
Olsen and Brazilian guard Tercya Ferreira formed a deadly 1-2 punch for the Cardinals. Ferreira went 10 of 19 from the field on the night as she finished with 23 points. She also had eight rebounds, five steals and three assists.
The 'Hounds performed much better in the second half, going on a 27-5 run at one point to get within 76-64 with 6:38 remaining. But the Cardinals brought Olsen back in for a few moments and she scored six in a row to spark a 15-5 spurt that finally put away what hope for a comeback there might have been.
Leondra Doomes-Stephens led Fort Scott with 23 points while Kenya Doss added 20. Miranda Chaney contributed 12 points and Amber Bowles finished with 10 points, 15 rebounds and three assists, leading Fort Scott in the latter two areas.
The Greyhounds will host Cowley at 2 p.m. Saturday at Arnold Arena.
