Leona Mayfield, 88, of Fort Scott, died at 8:45 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, 2008, at the Arma Care Center in Arma.

Mrs. Mayfield was born Oct. 29, 1919 in Gross, Kansas, the daughter of Ralph Maxwell and Bessie Mae Brown Bean. Leona was a homemaker who lived in the Arcadia-Fort Scott area all her life. She was raised in Crawford County and attended Corinth School in rural Arcadia. She married Wayne Mayfield on Nov. 23, 1940 in Fort Scott. Mr. Mayfield preceded her in death Nov. 30, 2003.

Survivors include one daughter, Janice Mayfield of Fort Scott, two songs, Merle Mayfield and friend Margaret and Gary Mayfield and his wife Diana, both of Fort Scott, one sister, Donna Totman of Osage City, Kansas, one brother, Mile Bean of Parsons, three grandsons, Matt Perry of Overland Park, Jason Mayfield of Winona, Minn., and Joel Mayfield of Fort Scott, one granddaughter, Toni Clay of Chanute, and six great-grandchildren.

Leona was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Leo and Winfred Bean, and one sister, Florence Linn.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, 2008, at the Bedene Funeral Home in Arma with the Rev. Jim Bell officiating. Burial will be at the Evergreen Cemetery in Fort Scott. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Bedene Chapel in Arma where friends may call after 11 a.m. Wednesday.

The family suggests memorials to the Arma Care Center Residential Fund. Donations may be sent to or left at the Bedene Funeral Home, 517 E. Washington, Box 621, Arma, Kansas, 66712.
