No. 3 Johnson County subdues Greyhounds

Tuesday, January 22, 2008

OVERLAND PARK -- A poor first half and too many turnovers proved too much for Fort Scott Community College's women to overcome in an 82-75 loss to Johnson County in Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division play here Monday night.

The Cavaliers (3-3 in the East, 13-5 overall) came into the game ranked No. 3 in the NJCAA Division II poll. Because Johnson County is a Division II team, this loss won't affect the Greyhounds' seeding for the Region VI Division I Tournament in March.

Fort Scott (3-3, 10-5) shot only 33 percent from the field in the first half, making nine of 27 field-goal attempts, while Johnson County went 16 of 28. That shooting advantage gave the Cavaliers a 41-25 lead at halftime.

The Greyhounds shot 60 percent in the second half on 21 of 35 and outscored the Cavaliers 50-41. But that hole they dug for themselves in the first half proved to be too much to climb out from.

Brittany English led Fort Scott with 25 points followed by Kenya Doss with 23, Leondra-Doomes Stephens with 12 and Amber Bowles with 10 points to go along with her 11 rebounds.

Meghan Waggoner led Johnson County with 21 points. Britteny Slifer and Bethany Schwab each scored 14 and Katie Buenger had 11.

Fort Scott held a 40-26 advantage on the boards. Johnson County was credited with 24 assists to 17 for the Greyhounds. Doss was awarded seven assists.

Fort Scott's men also played and lost 74-56. No other details were available at press time. This was the Greyhounds' eighth straight loss as they fell to 0-6, 5-13. Johnson County improved to 3-3, 11-7.

Both Greyhound teams host Labette Wednesday night in conference play. Labette women, ranked No. 22 in Division I, defeated Cowley, 73-64, Monday while Cardinal men lost to the 12th-ranked Tigers, 82-65.
