Disappointing weekend for Tiger wrestlers
PAOLA -- As fas as head coach David Brown was concerned, there wasn't much to write home about.
Fort Scott High's wrest-ling team, coming off a sweep of a Southeast Kansas League triangular at the FSHS gymnasium Thursday night, was unable to follow that up Saturday in the Paola Tournament, finishing 12th out of 13 teams.
"Not a very good weekend for the Tigers," Brown said in his e-mail to the Tribune Monday. "We did not wrestle well and when you combine that with tough competition, you will not find too many placers."
Only one of the 11 grapplers Brown took with him was able to come away with a medal: Denzell Davis (10-6), who was fourth at 119 pounds.
A few others had a chance to place, according to Brown, coming within one match. Justin Sharp, Blake Cox, Lee Culbertson, Blake Nelson and Nick Wallace all had chances but lost the match before the medal round. Three of the four lost on the third period of their final match.
Not many details were provided on each wrestler but this is how it went in general: Sharp was 2-2 at 112 pounds, Michael Durossette 1-2 at 125, Jonathan Hoyle 0-2 at 135, Cox 1-2 at 140, Culbertson 2-2 at 152, Blake Cowen 0-2 at 160, Nelson 3-2 at 171, Andre Davis 1-2 at 189, Drew Bryant 0-2 at 215 and Wallace 0-2 at 285.
Great Bend won the meet with 150 points. Pittsburg, which had the lead going into finals, finished second with 129. Fort Scott scored 26 points.
The Tigers go to Independence Thursday for a league triangular that also includes Labette County.
