Tuesday, December 4, 2007

COFFEYVILLE -- Fort Scott Community College's women defeated Butler early Sunday morning at the Jayhawk Conference Shootout here.

Leondra Doomes-Stephens led the Greyhounds, 5-1, with 24 points while Kenya Doss added 17. Those two are currently tied for eighth in the Jayhawk Conference in scoring at 15.8 points per game.

Those two made up for an off morning in terms of scoring for freshman Ashley Jappa, who is listed as fourth in scoring at 19.2 points per game. Although she only had six points, she hauled down 12 rebounds. She's fourth in the conference with 9.8 rebounds per game while teammate Amber Bowles is fifth at 9.7.

Bowles also scored 12 points for the 'Hounds while Miranda Chaney added 10.

Butler, 4-8, brought one of the conferences's top scorers with it into the contest. Lekeisha Levi, third in the Jayhawk at 20.7 points per game, was among the top scorers in the nation at one point this season. She scored 20 points in this contest, but 12 of them came at the free-throw line.

Levi is also third in the conference with 10.4 rebounds per game but has only six in this contest. The battle of the boards between the teams was close, however, with Butler holding a 55-53 advantage.

The Greyhounds held the Grizzlies to 23-percent field-goal shooting as Butler connected on 20 of 69 attempts. Fort Scott shot 35 percent on 26 of 74 and was seven for 23 from three-point range.

Chaney was credited with seven assists for the 'Hounds.

Fort Scott's women will have a long break as they don't play again until Dec. 29 when they will host Barton County at Arnold Arena.

Hutchinson men 79, Fort Scott 45.

After scoring a shot-clock-era worst 37 points in Friday's loss to Garden City, Fort Scott's men followed that up with the second-worst point total of the era in a 79-45 loss to Hutchinson in the final men's game of the Shootout.

Jamill Harris scored 19 points for the Greyhounds and Brandon Kinnie added 12 as Fort Scott got much better stats from its guards than Friday night. But Arsenio Williams, the Jayhawk Conference's fourth-leading scorer at 19.9 points per game, was held in check. He led the 'Hounds with 19 in Friday's loss but finished with just seven Sunday as he was able to take just four shots from the field.

Ken Bowman led Hutchinson with 26 points and 11 rebounds. He made 13 of 20 shots from the field. Bobby Maze scored 10 points and dished nine assists for the Blue Dragons, 8-4. Antonio Weary also scored 10 for Hutch.

The Greyhounds, 3-5, shot just 30 percent from the field as they connected on only 15 of their 50 field-goal attempts. They went 0 for 7 from three-point range, making them 5 for 40 on the season -- with three of those makes coming in one game. In their last four games, the 'Hounds are 0 for 22 on three-point shots.

Hutchinson also had a 54-30 rebounding advantage. Willie Bland had eight rebounds to lead Fort Scott while Williams grabbed seven.

The Greyhounds travel to Hutchinson this weekend for a two-day classic. The Greyhounds will play the Friends University JV Friday and Central Nebraska Saturday. Both games will tip off at 3:30 p.m. each night at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.
