The column about nothing; Seinfeld would be proud

Saturday, November 3, 2007

Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, I have nothing for you this week.

That's right: nothing. All the things happening in Kansas this weekend take place after the deadline for our Sunday edition, so there are no game stories. There was somebody I wanted to talk to for a story but they're going to be out of town, so there went that idea.

This is going to be the "Seinfeld" of writing: A column about nothing. And that's not too bad because I've been bouncing around everywhere for a few weeks. So to have nothing is actually, sort of refreshing.

Not that there isn't anything going on at all. It's hard to believe that basketball season's already started. Cottey's already going and Fort Scott Community College begins next week. It's hard to believe that basketball can start when football isn't over yet.

The University of Kansas played an exhibition Thursday night and gave Pittsburg State a thousand bucks for the right to blast them off the face of the Earth. Emporia State is next. But at least the cash goes to in-state schools. During the Roy Williams era, someone asked why K.U. was paying Central Missouri State and North Dakota State to come in for the crushing when they could play any of the six in-state Division II schools.

Oops, I'm taking about something. I guess I'd better get back to the topic of nothing.

Nothing. Like what I was planning to do Friday night. A Friday night during the school year when nothing's going on is pretty rare. But since Kansas wants to get its football state championships played before the end of the month and all on the same weekend, it's necessary. And that results in two open Fridays.

There will be another open Friday over here during the mid-season tournament week in January. Because Fort Scott is playing in the Willard Tournament one more time, it won't be able to enter a mid-season tournament. That's because with the double-round robin league schedule going into effect this season, you have 16 league games.

That leaves only four openings in Kansas 20-game limit. Since one tournament is three games, that means you can't play in two tournaments or else you'd go over the season limit.

So this means that both the Fort Scott boys and girls will have that mid-season tournament week off. And since the Pleasanton mid-season tournament never plays on Friday unless it snows, that leaves another open Friday.

Wait. I'm talking about something again. Back to the subject: nothing.

Speaking of, who else felt kind of ripped off by that final episode of Seinfeld?

Hold on, though it was a show about nothing, the show itself is something, so I've drifted off topic again.

I think I've given myself a headache.

Well, until next week, when I should have something, I'll leave you with nothing.
