Devon Ruritan members elect officers, plan Halloween party

The Devon Ruritan met for their monthly meeting on Thursday, Oct. 4, at the Devon Community Center. The meeting was called to order by President Joann Fowler and prayer was given by Jim Thurston. A delicious chicken and noodle dinner was served by the Devon United Methodist Women. Roll call was taken by secretary Cindy Lashley with nine members and seven guests present. Treasurer's report was read by Cindy and all approved as read. The annual Community Halloween party plans were finalized and we will have prize money for the best costumes in various age categories and treats and popcorn for the kids,a wienie roast, hayride, bobbing for apples and a cake walk, It will be held from 6-8 p.m. Oct 26, at the Devon Community Center. The members also set a cleaning time for the annual Devon UMW Harvest Festival. The Harvest Festival will be held Oct 18, at the Devon Community Center, serving to start at 5 p.m. Members also set a cleaning and decorating time for the Halloween party. Special guest for the evening was Zone Gov. Ray LaRue. Mr LaRue complimented on the clubs hard work this year and we will be receiving some awards for various things at the District Convention to be held Nov. 17 at Moran, he suggested all new club officers need to attend this training as you learn a lot of valuable information. We are also very proud to have two new members this month and the potential for three more. The 2008 Club Officers were elected and are as follows:

President, Shaune Campbell; Vice President, Betty Graham; and Secretary/Treasurer, Cindy Lashley. Board of Directors includes Jim Thurston, Howard McMeekin and Beverly McBride. The Ruritan will also be having a voting box at the UMW Harvest Festival for the public to vote on whether to change our annual Devon Days event to the Saturday before Memorial Day or not and also if the public has any ideas on how to make Devon Days better. Those planning to attend the Harvest Festival may voice their opinions on this important decision for the club.
