Baxter Springs nips Blu-Jays in overtime
PLEASANTON -- Baxter Springs' successful two-point conversion in overtime gave the Lions a 22-21 win over host Pleasanton in a non-league high school football game here Friday night.
T.J. Davis' 10-yard touchdown run gave the Blu-Jays the lead in overtime and Pleasanton's PAT kick made it 21-14.
Lions running back Cody Spencer went over from one-yard out in Baxter Springs' half of the OT period and the two-point conversion gave the Lions the victory.
Despite the loss, Pleasanton head coach Chris Brindle was proud of the effort his Blu-Jays have in their second year of 11-man football after several seasons of eight-man play.
"We played excellent defense," Brindle said. "We held a team that scored over 50 points in week one to one offensive touchdown in regulation. Our offensive line played well. We still have some things to correct but the team fought hard."
Baxter, 2-0, scored first when Jordon Krokroskia returned an interception 23 yards with 7:18 left in the first quarter. Spencer's two-yard run early in the second made it a 14-0 lead.
The Blu-Jays, 1-1, rallied to tie the game in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Jeff Fairbanks put Pleasanton on the board with a 15-yard run in the third period. He scored on a one-yard run with about a minute to go to tie it and send the game into overtime.
Davis led the Blu-Jays with 133 yards rushing on 25 carriess and also was one of five players with five tackles on defense. Kodee McKee, Logan Casey, Devan Bailey and Kolbee Mckee also recorded five tackles each.
Fairbanks rushed for 61 yards and passed for 38. Pleasanton had 246 yards of total offense to Baxter's 239.
The Blu-Jays play their first Three Rivers League game of the season when they travel to Jayhawk-Linn Friday night. The Jayhawks defeated Oswego, 12-0, Friday.
