GIRARD -- Uniontown's volleyball team split a non-league triangular here Tuesday night, falling to Girard while sweeping Erie.

Uniontown, 4-4, played the undefeated Trojans first. Girard, which qualified for the Class 4A State Tournament last season, won 25-14, 25-9. Abbie Smith was 12 of 16 in attack but had just two kills.

"They took us out of our game," Uniontown head coach Jackie Hall said. "We just didn't play up to out ability. We didn't do the little things that work for us. We didn't set up well and, when we did, our hitters wouldn't attack the ball. We had problems communicating and getting our defense set."

The Eagles swept Erie, 25-17, 25-19, as Kyli Harvey was 11 of 12 in attack with four kills and Riley Stephens served 12 points.

"Against Erie, we got back on track," Hall said. "Doing the little things much better, setting up and attacking, communicating as a team and getting into defense. Both these matches were a learning experience, so I was proud to see the adjustments made from the first match to the second."

Uniontown's junior varsity played its first matches of the season. The Eagles lost to Girard, 19-25, 26-24, 25-20. Cassie Schwalm served nine points while Rayma Ridge served for eight.

Erie also defeated Uniontown, 25-23, 25-20. Julia Ayers served six points for the Eagles and Marliss Allen served for 5.

The Eagles step into Three Rivers League play a week from Thursday with a triangular at Oswego.
