Caps 4 Kids
Friday, August 10, 2007

Shown with 95 stocking caps, hand knitted by Bernita Hill, Carol MacArthur, Jane Adam and Norma Comstock, the ladies of the First Presbyterian Church. The caps are made to send to the Office of Indian Affairs in Washington D.C. The caps are to be distributed to kindergarten children on the reservations. Later, letters and photos will be sent from the children where the caps are to be sent. The program, originally called Knit-A-Cap, was started by two women doctors spending their summers on the reservations. They noted the high incidence of ear infections and broken eardrums. Bernita Hill has been involved with the project for over 12 years with Carol MacArthur joining last year and Jane Adams and Norma Comstock joining this year. Efforts to use bright colored yards and to add contrasting bands so the children can identify their caps are made. As I knit, I envision a child wearing the cap to keep warm, it makes the project meaningful, one of the knitters said. Submitted photo
