Dragoons' weekend ends in disappointment
Fort Scott's entry in the 2007 'Hounds Classic baseball tournament won its first game on Thursday but was unable to win again the rest of the tournament and finished 10th in the 10-team field.
This was a tough tournament with several teams representing baseball schools which had students paying large amounts of money to receive instruction. The tournament served as a fundraiser for Fort Scott Community College baseball.
The Dragoons lost both pool play games Saturday, falling to Khaos Gold of Denver, 7-4, and getting run-ruled by the Lee's Summit (Mo.) Bandits, 14-4.
The Dragoons finished fifth in their pool and were matched up against Gardner Sunday, a game they lost 5-2.
Khaos Gold scored all of its runs in the fourth through sixth innings of Saturday's first game to pick up its only win of the tournament. Denton Ramsey was two for three for the Dragoons. Alex Bowman scored twice.
Fort Scott led the second game 3-0 after half an inning thanks in part to a two-run home run by Cody Kramer. It was tied at 4-4 after two innings but Lee's Summit scored in every inning played, including five times in the fifth inning.
Ramsey was three for three for the Dragoons. Kramer and Dakota Hall were each two for two while John Leek was two for three.
Gardner took a 3-0 lead after a half inning of Sunday's game. Dustin Maurer held the Dragoons to one earned run on six hits and two walks while striking out five as he pitched a complete game.
Fort Scott didn't score until the bottom of the seventh when Bowman's sacrifice fly plated Cole Pruitt and Mikey Karleskint ended up scoring as the result of a wild throw by the catcher in an attempt to get him at third.
Bowman, Ramsey, Kramer, Pruitt and Dexter Patton each had one of Fort Scott's hits.
Pittsburg took seventh place with a 13-4 win over Khaos Gold. As of press time, the Tribune did not have results from Sunday's other three games, which included Lee's Summit versus the Topeka Stars in the championship.
