Six 'Hounds earn KJCCC honors
Six members of Fort Scott Community College's baseball team earned All-Conference honors from the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference.
Freshman Clay Cuno, who led FSCC with 12 home runs, was named the Freshman of the Year in the Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division. Cuno, also a First-Team outfielder, signed with the University of Nebraska before the season began.
Also making the First Team was sophomore Lawson Hipps, named as the designated hitter. Also on the First Team were Cowley first baseman Jason Sower, third baseman Tom O'Gorman and pitcher Lance Hoge, Kansas City Kansas catcher Mike Sharp and outfielder Tom Myers, Independence second baseman Vince Pironti, Neosho County shortstop Zack Murry, Coffeyville pitcher Jon Barnes and Allen County pitcher Jon Volk.
Sophomore shortstop Tom Fitzgerald and freshmen third baseman Trevor Geist and pitcher Jeff Rydman represent Fort Scott on the Second Team. They are joined by Allen County outfielder Tyler Herrig and pitcher Todd Bryan, Cowley catcher Ryan McMillan, Coffeyville second baseman Jordan Poland and outfielder Johnny Roberts, Independence designated hitter John Nagel, Johnson County outfielder Justin Miller and Labette pitcher Tyler Brunridge.
Sophomore catcher Tyler Cox was Fort Scott's choice for Honorable Mention. Also included was Cowley pitcher Drew Graham, a 2005 graduate of Fort Scott High School. Rounding out the HM squad are Allen County second baseman Travis Ice and pitcher Charles Kelly, Independence shortstop Justin Beal and outfielder Tino Roberts, Highland third baseman Brock Spangenberg, Neosho County outfielder Jake Hoover and KCK pitcher Brennen Auerbach.
There were no picks for Second Team first baseman or Honorable Mention first baseman and designated hitter.
NOTES -- Cowley, the KJCCC-Eastern Division champion, came out of the losers' bracket to win the Region VI Tournament and will represent Kansas at the Junior College World Series in Grand Junction, Colo.
The Tigers, 47-16, lost to Garden City in the first round Friday night but beat the Broncbusters, 37-26, in routs on consecutive nights to win the tournament. On Monday, Cowley beat Butler 3-2 to reach the championship round, then ripped Garden City 15-7.
That forced Tuesday's second championship game, which the Tigers won easily, 16-0....
