Golfers take second at Buck Quincy Invitational
IOLA -- Fort Scott High's golf team had its three-tournament winning streak broken as Girard took the team title and the top two individual places at the Buck Quincy Invitational here Monday.
The Tigers finished second as a team with a four-man score of 324. Girard scored a 315 as Trey Scallions won the individual crown with a 36 on the front nine and a 39 on the back for a total of 75. He won a scorecard playoff with teammate J.D. Heatherly (38-37).
Cole Murrin took third with his 38-38--76 to lead the Tigers in the 16-team affair. Chris Brown was sixth at 42-36--78 and Dylan Renfro placed 10th at 41-42--83.
"It's becoming old hat to name our three medalists," Fort Scott heads coach Ken Klassen said. "The conditions were ideal. Each golfer could have easily done better.
"Girard beat us for the second time this year. Our boys competed well but have to improve three strokes apiece by the end of the year. We can do that if we work hard."
The only other tournament the Tigers didn't win this season was the first one at Independence. The host school took the title that day with Girard second and Fort Scott third.
Because of the large field -- there were 91 golfers in all -- this tournament awarded medals down to 25th place. Luke Geneva (50-37) and Tanner Beckham (44-43) both shot 87 to finish in a seven-way tie for 17th. Paul Norris finished in a tie for 33rd with his 47-44--91.
Fort Scott's next outing is Thursday at Coffeyville. Play will begin there at 3 p.m.
