Tiger golfers win by 10 strokes at Columbus
COLUMBUS -- Fort Scott High's golf team won the team title by 10 strokes here Monday as Chris Brown and Cole Murrin finished with the top two individual scores.
The Tigers shot 325 as a team as Brown finished first, shooting a 38 on the front nine and 36 on the back for a total of 74. Murrin came in with a 78 to help Fort Scott post the low four-man score.
"Winning again as a team was good," Fort Scott head coach Ken Klassen said of his team's third consecutive tournament title. "But more important for us, looking toward the end of the season, was that Chris and Cole did well."
Tyler Cook, in his first varsity tournament, finished seventh for the Tigers with an 84. Luke Geneva's 89 rounded out the four scores for the team total.
Fort Scott also got a 90 from Dylan Renfro and a 125 from Zach Culbertson, who was also making his first varsity appearance.
"Dylan and Luke played well most of the time," Klassen said. "Luke had some tough luck with balls that were lost in the soft ground after last week's heavy rains.
"Tyler really did well with his seventh-place finish. Zack ran into some difficulty. He's done much better in practice and has a great attitude. He'll do better next time out. Zach has a solid character and is a great kid to work with."
Girard was the second-place team with a score of 335. Columbus was third at 349.
The Tigers are idle until next Monday when they travel to Iola for the day-long Buck Quincy Invitational. Play at Cedarbrook Country Club is set to begin at 8:30 a.m.
JUNIOR VARSITY -- Fort Scott's JV went to Chanute Monday, finishing third as a team. Evan Heiser led the Tigers with a nine-hole score of 51. Lee Culbertson shot a 54 followed by Andy Gant at 56, Joe Hixson 57 and Corey Midkiff, also at 57.
The Tiger JV is scheduled to travel to Iola today.
