'Hounds pick up pair of splits

Wednesday, April 4, 2007

Fort Scott Community College's baseball team split its most recent doubleheaders but remains on top of the Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division.

The Greyhounds, 9-3 in the division and 20-9 overall, split Thursday at Johnson County, winning the first game 7-6 and losing the second 6-3.

Eldon Little was the winning pitcher in relief in the opener. He allowed an unearned run on three hits while striking out five.

Fort Scott had 12 hits, two each from Lawson Hipps, Clay Cuno, Trevor Geist, Brandon Lessnau and Andrew Minnich. Minnich and Geist each hit home runs for the 'Hounds.

Johnson County, 7-5, 12-9, scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning of the second game to take the win. Fort Scott had just five hits in the game although Brandt Barnes drove in two runs.

A doubleheader scheduled for Highland Saturday was postponed as the field there wasn't dry enough to play on.

The Greyhounds went to Arkansas City Sunday to make up a doubleheader that was rained out earlier against the division's second-place team. Cowley won the first game 11-4 as the Tigers scored seven runs in the sixth inning. Daryl Graham, a Fort Scott High School graduate, was the winning pitcher for Cowley.

Fort Scott won the second game, 14-6, scoring four times in the fifth and five in the sixth. Cuno and Tyler Cox each had three hits for the Greyhounds. Geist and Zach Caldwell each had two. Caldwell also hit his first home run of the season.

Caldwell drove in four runs while Cox brought three runners home and Barnes drove in two.

Cowley remains in second place at 13-5, 21-10.
