Frazier leads Grizzly girls
Fort Scott High's girls were able to keep up with Labette County, the No. 2-ranked team in Class 4A, for about 10 minutes at the start of Tuesday night's Southeast Kansas League game at the FSHS gymnasium.
But 6' 4" junior center Kendra Frazier refused to be contained for very long. After scoring just five points in the first quarter, Frazier went on to finish with 23 and 10 rebounds in the Grizzlies' 58-39 win over the Tigers.
Fort Scott, 1-1 in the SEK, 3-11 overall, held an 11-6 lead with 3 1-2 minutes left in the opening period after scoring six straight points as they were able to force several early turnovers. But Frazier, who hadn't yet scored, put in the last five of the period for LCHS, sticking back a teammate's miss at the buzzer to bring the Grizzlies within 12-11.
Joce Allen's transition layup of her own steal with six minutes left in the half had Fort Scott within 16-15. But the Grizzlies, 2-0, 12-1, then scored 14 of the next 16, holding the Tigers without a field goal in the process.
Down 30-24 at the half, the Tigers looked to have some fight left as Afton Gray opened the half with a three-point goal. But the Grizzlies scored 11 of the next 13.
Hannah Hawkins scored five in a row on her own to bring the Tigers within 41-31with 1:10 to go in the third. But that was Fort Scott's last prolonged run of the night and Bailey Waugh scored the last four of the period to boost Labette County's lead to 14.
Frazier made eight of 12 shots from the floor and Labette County shot 51 percent as a team, making 20 of 39 field-goal attempts. Waugh added 16 points for the Grizzlies.
Gray was Fort Scott's leading scorer with 12 points while Allen and Hawkins each had eight. The Tigers shot 29 percent from the field on 12 of 41.
LCHS held a 36-23 rebounding advantage. Hawkins led Fort Scott with seven boards.
JUNIOR VARSITY -- Rachel Allen hit the shot that completed Fort Scott's rally and put the Tigers in the lead with one minute to go as the FSHS JV took a 44-40 win over LCHS. Jolee Sharp led the Tigers with 12 points while Beth Womeldorff added eight and Allen, Katelyn Simpson and Jamie Collins each had six.
FRESHMEN -- Labette County took a 49-31 win over the FSHS freshmen. Breianna Jones scored 11 points for the Tigers while Kachelle Young added seven. Sammi Therwanger had five rebounds.
Fort Scott's teams play at Independence Friday night.
