Rural family displaced by bedroom blaze

Friday, December 8, 2006

An electrical fire on Thursday ruined a room and caused smoke damage throughout a single story house at 1982 245th St. in rural Bourbon County.

No one was home when the blaze broke out, and no injuries were associated with the accident.

Owner Todd Madison discovered the fire around 2 p.m. and notified emergency workers. He didn't see actual flames, but the house was smoldering when he further investigated the incident, Madison told Bourbon County deputy sheriffs.

"We don't really know where to start," said Jenny Madison, Todd's wife, referring to the clean-up process that will follow. "It's like a bad dream."

The fire was self-contained in their daughter's room, ruining the walls and the contents of the room, deputy sheriffs said. Also, the fire caused heavy smoke damage, and black silt covered other areas of the house.

An electrical problem in the basement apparently sparked the blaze.

The fire was out by the time firefighters arrived on the scene. Jenny said the fire was present in the wall and floor of the house, inching upward from the basement to the room. She said a water line burst during the blaze, helping to douse the fire.

A dollar amount of damages was not immediately known.

The family is staying at a relative's house nearby, Jenny said.
