Recent birthdays honored in Arcadia Christian Church were for Wayne and Christi Parrish and Michelle Watt, John Parrish and Blake Long. Guests on the last Sunday in October were Chris Brooks and daughter Sierra Brooks from Marshall, Mo. and her friend Ariel Allen.
Nov. 5 was Youth Sunday. As a group they sang "Jesus Loves Me" and read scripture as a skit. At communion time, four of them, Aarron Henrich, Austin Sprague, Courtney Allen and Skye Montayne served the congregation.
Forty guests at the dinner hour enjoyed the Chicken Annie's fried chicken with side dishes and a special birthday cake to honor Christi.
To remind folks in this area who are 75 years of age and older the annual Thanksgiving dinner will be served in the bungalow on Saturday evening at 5 p.m. This is a gift to the congregation and their friends from the JOY Sunday School Class.
The Saturday of the Open Door Fest, early afternoon there were lots of garden tractors from out of town who joined in the races for the prizes won on the east edge of the ball park. The firemen were in charge of the concession stand selling hot dogs, hamburgers and soft drinks. At one time during the day, 30 motorcycle riders came to town, parked near Christian Church and presented a gift of education to Josie Bryant. That evening a large crowd gathered in the lawn of the Open Door Mission for fun, food and fellowship. Among them were Max and Pauline Davidson who recently moved from Liberal, Mo. downtown to their country home near relatives in Rural Hannon, Mo.
Bert Sprague whose funeral was Monday, Nov. 6, in the Englevale Cemetery was well known in Arcadia when he worked for Shead's Service. He used to tell of his experience when Japan bombed Hawaii. He was there in the Navy. At one time, he worked with a carnival and would give little ones free rides. Among other things he did in his younger years, he instructed young people who were learning to skate at a rink in Kansas City. Before his own illness, he helped care for his good friend Frank Shead after Shead had a stroke. Bert leaves a son, Mr. and Mrs. Tim Sprague and three grandchildren, Austin, Alanis and Bridgette Sprague, of Parsons.
This fall, Ruby Van Dusen and son, Jim Ward from Kansas City, Mo. visited her sister, Ernestine and Forrest Berkey in Arcadia.
There are two times in November when folks can get flu shots in Arcadia, from 11 a.m. - noon, Monday Nov. l3, in Autumn Leaves Senior Citizens' Cottage and at 10 a.m., Monday, Nov. 20 in Arcadia Community Center.
On Oct. 13, Karen Self of Fort Scott and Vickie Shead each drove a van with other ladies from the Abundant Grace Church to St. Louis for the weekend Ladies conference of NFI on Friday and Saturday.
Craig Woolsey, pictured beside Kevin Moyers in The Fort Scott Tribune on Friday, Oct. 27, is a former pastor of Arcadia Christian Church when Craig was a student in Ozark Christian College, Joplin. He and wife Shirley Woolsey will be returning to the United States, and living near their children in Tulsa, in March 2007. Arcadians are proud to say, "We remember Craig and Shirley way back when." They spent nearly 30 years as missionaries in Santiago, Chile. Moyers went there for the church's 25th anniversary celebration. He is pastor of Community Christian Church in Fort Scott who helped support these missionaries and others in Chile.
Leona Mayfield celebrated her 87th birthday on Sunday, Oct. 29 in the activity room with 32 present in Arma Care Center. Her family members present were Merle, Janice, Gary and Diana Mayfield from Fort Scott; Donna and Tink Totman, Debbie and Marcie from Osage City; Milo and Louise Bean, Parsons; Marvin, Linda Bean and Bryer, Pittsburg; Joyce Bradburn, K.C.; Buddy and Janet Bean, Mike and Linda Bean, Girard. Friends wishing her many happy returns were Bro and Kathy Baysinger, Manhattan; Marilyn Forton, Mulberry; Rich and Brenda Millish, Orange City. Friends from the Care Center were Florence, Candie and Tyler, nurses aids; Julia and family, Judy and Gatore Dean, Peachy Bedene, Mary Gardner and daughter, Barbara Gardner Scott, from Fort Scott.
Ice cream and cake were served. The honoree received gifts and cards, including a dozen red roses.
