Pastor Moyers takes mission trip to Santiago, Chile
Community Christian Church Pastor Kevin Moyers used the words "inspirational" and "fulfilling" to describe his recent mission trip to Santiago, Chile.
Moyers traveled to Santiago earlier this month to visit Metropolitan Church of Christ, a Chilean church that Community Christian Church in Fort Scott has helped fund and operate for the past 12 years. This year marked the 25th anniversary of the Chilean church.
During his week-long stay in Santiago, Moyers performed a sermon through a Spanish-speaking translator at the church as well as attending home Bible studies. Moyers said it was his first time visiting the church.
"It was their 25th anniversary and they asked me to come down and be part of their day," Moyers said.
He added that he was impressed to see success the church has attained. Moyers said about 400 people per week attend services at the Metropolitan Church of Christ, which makes it the largest Protestant church in Santiago.
"It's very inspiring to see the work that's being done," Moyers said. "Lots of people have contributed to that church during the past 25 years. It's very fulfilling to see that community in Santiago support that church."
Moyers is also proud that the Chilean church has grown to become self-supporting and that they "no longer rely on the American dollar." He added that the American missionaries who helped set up the church will be returning to the United States in next year.
Because the Chilean church can now support itself, Moyers said Community Christian Church will be able to use their missionary funds for other projects.
"We will redirect the dollars at possibly another (international) mission," Moyers said. "We're looking at our options."
Dusty Drake, Community Christian Church associate minister, also recently traveled abroad on a mission trip. Drake left for a two-week trip on Oct. 12 and just returned within the last couple of days.
Drake, who was not available for comment, spoke at youth conferences in Central India where several thousands of Indian youth gathered for a four-day learning program.
Drake also traveled to several churches and participated in worship services. The trip was conducted through "Central India Christian Mission" and its goal is to introduce Christ to a predominately Hindu nation.
Community Christian Church is located at 1919 S. Horton St. in Fort Scott.
