The last weekend in September, a group called BROFUGE, Brotherhood and Refuge Retreat, was held at the Shead farm with 12 ladies and 12 men from Oral Roberts University in Tulsa. Late Friday night there was a hay ride and praise and worship. Saturday was spent helping on the farm and study and rest period. After devotions on Sunday morning the group left for their school and back to classes.
Betty and Lou Dehn spent a recent weekend on Truman Lake in Missouri. Their son, Brent Zellar and Krista McMullen with their son B. J. met them there and were later joined by Betty's parents, Earl and Ollie Hill on Saturday afternoon.
On Monday evening, Sept. 11, Eleven members met for the JOY business meeting and carry in dinner. Members and their friends are asked to save Best Choice labels for the Missions Giving Project of the class.
President Patty Peterson opened the meeting with the question, What is considered the middle scripture in the Bible? Psalm 118 was answered by Pastor David Peterson.
Jace and Jess Pavlik were absent due to a College Press picnic in Joplin that evening. Jace is an employee of the Press whose president is Chris DeWelt, former pastor in Arcadia.
The Pavliks, students of Ozark Christian College, have agreed to be Sunday School teachers for the young people in Arcadia Christian Church.
Vera Parish and Mary Lee Payne gave the readings for the laughter that evening. President closed with this quote by C. S. Lewis, "Aim at heaven and you'll get earth thrown in. Aim at earth and you get neither."
Others in attendance were Bob and Ava Mae Adams, Mary V. Shead, John Parrish, Jack Payne, Mae Watt and Gary Peterson.
Dan Corporon from Neosho, Mo. called his aunt Mary V. Shead, to say he remembered reading 25 years ago that a friend had taken Paul Coffman, a famous football player to the Shead home when he was with the Green Bay Packers. Corporon thought about this as he was watching a football game on TV being played in Columbia, Mo. with Chase Coffman, son of Paul Coffman, a member of the team.
The Ladies Aid members removed the finished quilt belonging to Lilly Coonrod last week and marked the new one, put it in the frames to start fresh this week. Those busy ladies are Patty Peterson, Carole Garrison, Alice Townsend, Wanda Norris and Lilly. At noon they were joined by Pastor David Peterson as they gathered in the bungalow kitchen for their lunch. A friend took dessert of angel food cake to cheer them on.
Mark Shead celebrated his 31st birthday with his family, Haley Shead, Vickie and Larry Shead and Mary V. Shead on Monday evening at the Hot Wok Chinese Restaurant in Fort Scott. Before the dinner, all went to Christian Heights School where they saw the exhibits on display for Open House that evening. Vickie Shead is the 4 - 5th grade teacher.
The next day Mark and Haley left for Texas where they will visit her family.
Tom and Phyllis Watt spent a week vacation in Denver and attended the wedding of her long time girlfriend who was married on horseback.
Tom played golf and enjoyed sight seeing. They took an early morning flight back home to Lee's Summit, Mo. on Monday.
He checked into his office in Overland Park and headed for Arcadia in order to enjoy evening meal with his mother, Mae Watt. 5 a.m. Tuesday he left for Tulsa where he played in a golf tournament with friends. Wednesday he had a business conference before returning to Arcadia for overnight. Thursday he and Mae ran errands and enjoyed dinner at Harry's Café before he returned to his home in Lee's Summit.
The first Sunday of October in the Arcadia Christian Church found the morning filled with activity. It was Children's Sunday as 11 of them sang in rhythm "Count Your Blessings." They were directed by Jess and Jace Pavlik and Linda Bridgewater assisted by Ceara Bridgewater.
Birthday offering was given by Courtney Allen, age 7, and a 22nd anniversary offering for Linda and Bill Bridgewater.
Skye Montanye, accompanied by her mother to church, was baptized before Communion was served by three of her Sunday School class members, Austin Sprague, Aaron Heinrich, Nat Cable and deacon Wayne Parrish. Jessie Dunn played a medley of songs during offering time. The Sunday School offering goes to Pittsburg State Campus Christians.
A duet was sung, "The Joy of the Lord," by former Pastor Charles Cable and grandson, Nat Cable, guests with Willa Cable.
Scripture text was taken from Judges 2:10. Faith and obedience is necessary for generation to generation. Faith in God is personal, but it must be passed on. We were left with this question: "What has God done for you?"
Among others, the many guests for church and the dinner hour were Velma Jewell with teacher friend Nancy Cole from Greenfield, Mo.; Hardy and Jessie Dunn guests of Jack and Mary Lee Payne.
