Howard P. Schmidt

Howard Paul Schmidt, age 93, a resident of Fort Scott, Kansas, died Monday, October 2, 2006, at the Mercy Health Center. Paul was born July 6, 1913, at the family farm west of Mound City, Kansas, the son of William Otto Schmidt and Emma Pearl Osborn Schmidt. He graduated from the Mound City High School and served in the United States Army under General Patten in the European campaign. While serving in the Army Paul was awarded several medals. He married Ethel Leone Northway on January 16, 1946, in Mound City. She preceded him in death in 1991. He was a member of the Community Christian Church in Fort Scott and the Mound City American Legion. He was a life-long farmer and also worked many years for the Linn County Road Crew. He loved to read and play cards.

Paul is survived by three sons, Steven H. Schmidt and wife Nancy, Davidson, Oklahoma, Ross E. Schmidt, Fort Scott, and Charles W. Schmidt, Fort Scott; a daughter, Paula Cochran and husband Tim, Keller, Texas; a brother, Edward B. Schmidt, Pleasanton, Kansas; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents and wife, Paul was preceded in death by a brother, Louis Schmidt, and a sister, Wilma Shaw.

The Rev. Kevin Moyers will conduct funeral services for H. Paul Schmidt at 1:30 p.m., Friday, October 6, 2006, at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Burial with military honors by Mound City American Legion Post #248 will follow in the Curry Cemetery.

The family will receive friends for visitation from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday at Cheney Witt.
