Public meeting Thursday about Broadway

Wednesday, October 4, 2006

The City of Fort Scott is encouraging residents living on Broadway and surrounding neighborhoods to attend a meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday at the First Church of the Nazarene at 801 E. Third St. The meeting will be held in the church's Fellowship Hall by entering on the east side of the church at the furthest door north door.

Many Broadway residents have asked city officials to take a look at multiple traffic changes for improving the street's safety. Commissioners want to gather input at the meeting from residents about those alternatives before any action is taken, according to a statement by the city.

The city has distributed brochures to residents living on the street in recent days advising them of the upcoming event.

Broadway's safety has been questioned by residents who claim vehicles speed up and down the street mainly because of the street's lack of stop signs and narrow configuration due to vehicles parked on the shoulder.

The street's safety was questioned publicly by former commissioner Kevin Allen last month at a commission meeting. About three weeks later, a 30-year-old Fort Scott man was killed in a motorcycle accident at the 200 block of Broadway.

Commissioner John Keating, at Tuesday's commission meeting, objected to a connection made in an article in Friday's issue of The Fort Scott Tribune between the man's death and the concerns expressed about the safety of Broadway. Keating said the accident had nothing to do with the safety of the street.
