Madison 9th at 4A State

HUTCHINSON — Fort Scott junior Lauren Madison finished in a medalist’s position at the Class 4A State Golf Tournament at Carey Park here Tuesday, a day later than scheduled due to a wet course caused by storms in the area on Sunday.

Madison, who won the Independence Class 4A Regional a week ago, shot 45 on the front nine and 41 on the back to finish with a total of 86 strokes. This was her third appearance in a State Tournament. She finished 11th at Hesston in 2016 and tied for 22nd last season.

Tiger freshman Karlie Chipman shot 53-52—105 and tied for 49th but was the third best player among the seven freshmen in the field. Darlin Bartel of Winfield topped the ninth graders in the field with a score of 49-49—98 that tied for 30th.

Hannah Hawks, a junior from Wichita Trinity, finished as the State champion individually by 7 strokes, shooting 33-35—68, three under par. Morgan Brasser of Andale (38-37) finished second after a three-way playoff at 75. Trinity’s Madison Clayton (38-37) placed third and defending champion Caroline Setter of Topeka Hayden (39-36) was fourth.

Madison was the best golfer among those from Southeast Kansas League schools. Next in line was Chanute’s Jerlyn Kustanborter, who tied for 13th with three others after shooting 46-43—89.

Hayden won the team title for the second consecutive season, shooting 331 as a team. Andale was second at 344 followed by Chanute at 381. Girard finished eighth at 397.

At the Class 5A tournament in Hesston, SEK champion Sam Maceli of Pittsburg finished fifth following a three-way playoff at 78.
