Tennis wins pair of seconds at Chanute

CHANUTE — Fort Scott High’s tennis team continues to make positive strides as the Tigers picked up two second-place finishes in a four-team tournament here Thursday.

Both doubles teams earned the second-place medals in round-robin play. The No. 1 team of Britni Addington and Patience Richwine (7-3) lost their first match to Labette County’s Page Burleigh/Lexi Baughman, 8-2, but went on to beat Pittsburg’s Minnifield/Hutson, 8-1, and Chanute’s Shayla Bogle/Taylor Thompson, 8-6.

The No. 2 team of Abbie Houston/Shaylee Terry (4-2) was also 2-1 on the day. They fell to Clara Rucker/Aubri Case of LCHS, 8-5, but beat Pittsburg’s McCabe/Slaughter, 8-3, and won a tie-breaker over Chanute’s Lilly Falk/Kiley Smoot, 8-7 (3).

Both singles entries went 1-2 on the day for third-place finishes. Alexis Bailey (8-8) played No. 1 singles beating Labette’s Aubri Stewart, 8-4, then falling to Pittsburg’s Sarah Perez, 8-7 (6), and Chanute’s Mikayla Kwek, 8-0.

Addie Smith (2-4) lost to her first opponent in No. 2’s, Jaden Wyrick of LCHS, 8-2, beat Pittsburg’s Sophia Shope, 8-2, and lost to Hannah Hugo of Chanute, 8-6.

Results are also in from a tournament Sept. 21 at Pittsburg, where a slightly different lineup was used. Fort Scott had three fourth-place finishes.

Richwine (4-7) played No. 1 singles and won her first two matches over Taylor Darrow of Lamar, Mo., 8-5, and Hannah Kirk of Columbus, 8-0. She lost to Pittsburg’s Nicole Konopelko, 8-2, and to Iola’s Allie Utley in the third-place match, 8-6.

Addington and Terry (2-9) were the No. 1 doubles team for this tournament. They also won their first two matches, beating Kiersten Mahurin/Faith White of Lamar, 8-3, and Haddie Gideon/Gentry Westervelt of Columbus, 8-4. Their two losses were by identical 8-4 scores to Kameryn Kelly/Emily McGown of Pittsburg and Gabbi Richards/Carley Payne of Iola in the third-place match.

Houston and Smith (4-2) played No. 2 doubles. They beat Lexi Phipps/Leah McDonald of Lamar, 8-5, and Jozie Robison/Ashleigh Getman of Columbus, 8-0. They lost to Carmen Kent/Emma Lawson, 8-2, and Labette County’s Rucker/Case, 8-1, in the third-place match.

Bailey played No. 2 singles and was 1-2. She lost to Lamar’s Alsira Juarez in a tie-breaker, 8-7 (7) and Pittsburg’s Lilly Cawyer, standing in for an absent Columbus entry, 8-2. She beat Pittsburg’s Emma Fisher, 8-2.

The Tigers are playing in the Southeast Kansas League Tournament today at Independence. They’ll return there next Saturday for the Independence Class 4A Regional Tournament.
