Coffeyville shuts out Tiger soccer, 4-0
Coffeyville junior Tate Thornburg was responsible for all of his team’s scoring as the visiting Golden Tornado shut out Fort Scott 4-0 in a Southeast Kansas League match at Ellis Park Tuesday night.
It was hoped to get in the day’s action before a cold front brought a storm system into town — and both the varsity and junior varsity games were played in full. But it turned out that Thonbrugh was a one-man storm, scoring in the 21st, 50th and 62 minutes for a hat trick and assisting on Jose Villanueva’s 34th-minute tally.
And it wasn’t as though the Tigers (0-7 SEK, 2-9 overall) were making it easy. They packed their defense back against the Golden Tornado (3-1, 10-1) but the visitors still got 36 shots off in the contest. Goalkeeper Noah Martin made 10 saves for Fort Scott off 14 shots on goal.
Coffeyville’s defense was also effective as Fort Scott was able to take just three shots in the match, two of them on goal. This was the fourth consecutive shutout posted by the Nado, which have outscored their opponents 27-0 in those four matches.
Coffeyville also won the junior varsity match, 4-1. Noah Bootle scored the Tigers’ only goal with three minutes remaining in the contest.
Fort Scott travels to Paola Tuesday afternoon.
