Tennis team sees success at Indy, Chanute
Fort Scott High’s tennis team found some success at Independence Tuesday and Chanute on Thursday as head coach Allison Gorman used different lineups in each tournament.
The six varsity players went in at different positions and each produced no worse than a 2-2 record on the day.
Britni Addington was moved to No. 1 singles and went 3-1. She shut out Labette County’s Berny Bradbury, beat Neodesha’s Hope Bigley, 8-1, lost to Independence’s Merdith Campbell, 8-0, and defeated Parsons’ Thea Hetlinger, 8-3.
Lexi Bailey played No. 2 singles and was also 3-1. She beat LC’s Layla Bradfield, 8-1, and Neodesha’s Ashley Chandler, 8-1, before she fell to Indy’s Blair Dodson, 8-2. She shut out Parsons’ Milo Kulrratanrak in her final match.
Addie Smith and Shaylee Terry were paired together as the No. 2 doubles team and also produced a 3-1 record. They beat Garcia/Jones of Neodesha, 8-1, Bainum/Short of Independence, 8-3, and Casper/Webb of Parsons, 8-0. They lost to Aubry Case/Aubri Stewart of Labette County, 8-3.
Abbie Houston and Patience Richwine were 2-2 as the No. 1 doubles team. They picked up wins over McKinnis/Bryant of Neodesha, 8-1, and Harper/Adams of Parsons, 8-2. They lost to Paige Burleigh/Lexi Bauman of LCHS, 8-1, and Morrison/Bertie of Independence, 8-4.
On Tuesday, Gorman made some more adjustments. Bailey went 2-2 in No. 2 singles with wins over Bethany Robinson of Columbus, 8-5, and Caysia Crellin of Chanute, 8-1. Emily McGown of Pittsburg was an 8-1 winner and Jennifer Tidd of Iola won 8-6.
Addington and Richwine played together as the No. 1 doubles team and also went 2-2. They beat Macy Gray/Haddie Gideon of Columbus, 8-1, and Lily Falk/Haley Angelton of Chanute, 8-2. They lost to Kameryn Kelly/Morgan Noe of Pittsburg, 8-5, and Gabby Richards/Carlie Payne of Iola, 8-3.
Houston moved to No. 1 singles. Her only win was over Sophie Osborn of Chanute, 8-4. She lost to Jaden Spainhower of Columbus in a tie-breaker, 8-7 (7), Nicole Konopelko of Pittsburg, 8-0, and was trailing Allie Utley of Iola, 5-0, when she had to retire.
Smith and Terry moved to No. 2 doubles. They beat Jozie Robison/Anistyn Schultz of Columbus, 8-2, and lost to Carmen Kent/Mattie Maple of Pittsburg, 8-2, Kassy Shelby/Sydney Shelby of Iola, 8-4, and Emma Jacobs/Gabby Rutledge of Chanute, 8-6.
The Tigers play host to their home invitational Tuesday with play beginning at 3 p.m.
