Atchisons advance in 3 events

FREDONIA — Northeast sophomores Jasper and Kenneth Atchison will represent Northeast in three events at the Kansas State Track and Field Championships at Wichita next weekend.

At Friday’s Class 3A Regional Meet here, Jasper won four medals and advanced to State in two events while Kenneth won two medals and will compete at State in high jump.

On the girls’ side, sophomore Carlee Beard was Northeast’s only medalist but she was unable to place high enough to go on to State. The top six finishers in each event earned medals but only the top four receive State meet berths.

Kenneth Atchison had Northeast’s highest finish of the day, tying for second place in high jump after a three-way tie-breaker. Atchison, Colin Gillespie of Humboldt and John Essig of Cherryvale all cleared 6 feet, 2 inches. Gillespie did so in fewer attempts and was named champion in the event. Atchison and Gillespie cleared that height and the previous height, six feet even, in the same number of attempts and were declared tied for second.

Jasper Atchison finished fourth in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 10:32.23, earning one of his two State berths, while Kenneth placed sixth in 10:56.08. Jasper Atchison was also fifth in the 1,600 meters in 4:45.43.

Jasper Atchison also medaled in both hurdles races, earning a State berth in the 110 meters with a fourth-place time of 15.78. He was fifth in the 300’s in 42.91.

Beard placed fifth in girls’ shot put with a mark of 33’ 2” and sixth in discus at 99’ 6”.

Kenneth Atchison will compete in high jump at State at 3 p.m. Friday. Jasper will run the 110-meter hurdles preliminaries at about 2:30 and compete in the 3A boys’ 3,200-meter finals at around 7:40 p.m. If Jasper Atchison advances in the hurdles, the finals will take place at about 10 a.m. Saturday morning.
