Uniontown sweeps Northeast in opener
ARMA — Uniontown and Northeast squared off in an early season-opening baseball doubleheader here Thursday with the visiting Eagles taking 9-5 and 12-7 wins.
This non-league doubleheader was scheduled to fill a hole in scheduling that happens because Altoona-Midway sponsors softball but not baseball. The league games will take place April 26 at Uniontown.
Nick Hathaway was the winning pitcher in the opener for Uniontown, allowing 2 earned runs on 2 hits and 5 walks while striking out 10. Kolby Seested came in for the final two outs, allowing a hit and a walk but striking out 2.
Graham Hathaway was 3 for 3 at the plate while Nick Hathway was 2 for 3 with a double and 2 runs batted in. Seested and Ty Griffiths each drove in 2 runs.
Blake Adelman had 2 hits for Northeast and drove in 2 runs. Pitcher Matt Cashero allowed 4 earned runs on 6 hits in 6 innings, didn’t walk anyone and struck out 11.
Uniontown used a 9-run rally in the top of the sixth to win game two. Andrew Reed was 2 for 3 for the Eagles and chance Fuhrman drove in 2 runs. Graham Hathaway was the winning pitcher, allowing 2 runs on 3 hits and 2 walks with 7 strikeouts in 3 innings of relief.
Cashero was 2 for 4 for the Vikings while Tejay Cleland was 2 for 3 and drove in 2 runs. Starting pitcher Dalton Reeves allowed 4 earned runs on 4 hits and 5 walks while striking out 6.
Both teams will enter Three Rivers League play in their next outings. Uniontown will host Crest in the Lancers’ first-ever baseball games at 3:30 p.m. on March 29. Northeast will travel to Oswego on April 2 for a twinbill that will begin at 4:30 p.m.
