Frontenac retains Cannonball Clash trophy
FRONTENAC — Frontenac retained possession of the Cannonball Clash traveling trophy here Thursday night, using wins in five out of the six weight classes between 132 and 170 pounds to aid in a 32-27 win over Fort Scott High.
The trophy made its debut last season with Frontenac winning it by a 54-28 score in a special performance at Fort Scott’s Memorial Hall.
Fort Scott held an 18-0 lead in the dual after four matches. Donald Harper won by forfeit for the Tigers (0-11 in duals) at 106 pounds and both teams were open at 113.
Corbin Shelden pinned Colby Reams at 120 pounds and Kyle Montojo stuck Bennie Adarr at 126.
Frontenac’s first win came at 132 pounds when Riley McDaniel won over Silas Taylor by technical fall, 17-1. Storm Niegsch won over Daevin Caldwell by pin at 138, Jeremiah Mellnick pinned Jacob Zubieta at 145 and Brendan Ishimura pinned Jon Daniels at 152, putting the Raiders in the lead, 20-18, after eight matches.
Logan Hall gave the lead back to Fort Scott at 160 when he took a 3-0 win over K.W. Hale to make it 21-20.
Kaleb Kroenke pinned Kaden Primm at 170 to give the lead back to Frontenac for good, 26-21. The next two weights, 182 and 195, were open for both teams. Nathan Kaufman clinched the dual for the Raiders with a pin over Grayson Quick at 220 to make it 32-21. Ben Daniels picked up a forfeit win for the Tigers at 285 to end the dual.
Austin Souder of Frontenac won an exhibition 132-pound match over Cameron Harper by a 3-2 score.
Fort Scott hosts a junior varsity round-robin junior varsity tournament today with action beginning at 9 a.m. The next varsity action will be in the Rose Hill Tournament on February 2 and 3.
The snowed-out home triangular with Columbus and Iola, originally scheduled for January 16, will be held at 5:30 p.m. February 6 at the FSHS main gymnasium.
