Tiger boys to face Monett for fifth today
FRONTENAC — Fort Scott High School’s boys split their first two games in the Kansas Army National Guard Invitational and will face Monett, Mo., for the first time in school history for fifth-place at 5:30 p.m. this evening.
Fort Scott’s girls have lost their first two games in the tournament. They will play at 1 p.m. today against Kansas City-Turner for seventh place. It will be the first meeting between the schools since 1994.
Summaries of the first two nights, in the order in which the games were played:
Thursday girls: Rogers (Ark.) Providence Academy 58, Fort Scott 48.
Kharsyn Dwyer’s free throws with around 5 1/2 minutes remaining tied the score at 46-46. But the fourth-seeded Tigers managed just two free throws the rest of the game as the fifth-seeded Patriots (12-8) went on a 12-0 run to clinch the game.
Fort Scott held a 15-10 lead late in the first quarter. But Jonisha Role and Hope Smith scored for Providence to bring them within four points.
Dwyer hit a 3-pointer to start the second for the Tigers. But Rolle scored the next 6 points to kick off a 11-2 run. Alaina Thomas put the Patriots ahead for the first time in the game with a 3-point shot to cap the streak with a 25-20 lead.
Fort Scott trimmed the deficit down to 3 late in the half on a 3-pointer by Ella Beth and a stickback of a teammate’s miss by Kelsie Nelson. But Acie Thurlby scored a 3-pointer to close out the half for Providence and Thomas hit another one to start the second half.
The Tigers scored the last 7 points of the third quarter to get within 44-42. Madison Cook’s basket with under 20 seconds left capped the scoring and also pusher her past Brianne Lawrence for seventh place on Fort Scott girls’ all-time scoring list. Cook had passed Tina Peterson for eighth in the second quarter.
Cook was the only Tiger in double figures with 19 points. No other Tiger had more than 7. Rolle scored 15 points before fouling out. Hayley Kate Webb, who has signed with NCAA Division II Harding (Ark.) also scored 15 for the Patriots.
Cook ended the game with 752 career points. Next on the list in sixth place is Kary Stewart, who scored 815 points from 1993-96. She only had three varsity seasons as FSHS eligibility rules at the time prohibited freshmen from playing on varsity.
Thursday boys: Pacific 59, Fort Scott 37.
Second-seeded Pacific (11-3) used balanced scoring in the first half — six players had between 5 and 7 points — and stifling defense in the second to take the win.
Fort Scott held an 8-7 lead after Alec Michaud hit a 3-pointer midway through the first quarter. But the Indians scored the next 16 points uninterrupted and 18 of the last 20 of the period to hold a 25-10 lead.
Pacific’s offense slowed down in the second but played well enough to extend the lead by two points at the half, although Jessie Lawrence did convert a 3-point play with 39 seconds to go to bring the Tigers within 38-21.
The teams combined to score a total of 10 points in the first quarter. Fort Scott scored the first 4 on baskets by Michaud and Jesse Jones.
Up 44-25 as the fourth quarter began, Pacific scored 11 of the first 14 of the period to remove any doubt.
Jones finished with 11 points for the Tigers while Michaud added 10. Joey Casey and Cameron Vanleer scored 11 each for the Indians and Tom Hennessy added 10.
Friday girls: Blue Springs, Mo. 41, Fort Scott 27.
Kelsie Nelson gave Fort Scott (4-7) the lead for the first time with about 4 1/2 minutes left in the third quarter as her basket put the Tigers ahead, 20-18.
Eighth-seeded Blue Springs (3-6) outscored Fort Scott the remainder of the contest 23-7, holding the Tigers without a field goal in that stretch.
It was the fewest points scored by the Tigers since falling to Paola in the first round of Sub-State last season, 46-25. That was also the last time Cook was held to fewer than 10 points but Blue Springs allowed the Fort Scott senior just one field goal and nine total points on the night.
Skyelar Brown led the Tigers with 12 points, 10 of them scored in the third as the Tigers rallied from an early 7-0 deficit to get within 17-16 at the half. Samaya Smith led the Wildcats with 11 points, 8 of those scored in the third.
Cook finished the game with 761 career points and stands 54 points behind Stewart.
Friday boys: Fort Scott 62, Riverton 38.
Jordan Hall posted his personal-best effort in scoring for the second time in eight days. After going for 21 in the Tigers’ 70-57 win at Independence a week prior, he scored 10 of his game-high 22 in the second quarter of this one.
Tied 12-12 with time running out in the first quarter, Matt Campbell scored a basket and Jessie Lawrence made one of two free throws to give the Tigers (4-7) a lead they’d never relinquish. Hall and Alec Michaud scored the first 4 of the second to make it 19-12.
Fort Scott closed out the first half of a 10-2 run with Hall scoring the first 4 and 6 total in the streak that made it 31-20 at the major break.
The Tigers also scored 9 of the first 12 of the second half in extending the lead to 40-23. They went into the fourth up 46-29 and also scored 10 of the last 12 of the game.
C.J. Horton, with 8 points, and Campbell, with 7, each also posted season bests in scoring.
After the tournament, Tiger teams are idle until Friday night when they host Girard.
