Host Humboldt sweeps Eagles in tourney
HUMBOLDT — Host Humboldt swept Uniontown’s teams on the first night of a pre-season round-robin basketball tournament here Tuesday night.
The Cubs’ girls squad opened with a 54-22 win over Uniontown after holding the Eagles (0-2) to nine points in the second half — just two in a third quarter Humboldt won 15-2 to extend a 26-13 halftime lead.
Harley Tinsley led the Eagles with 5 points. Danielle Young grabbed 9 rebounds.
"We played much better than we did in our season opener," Uniontown head coach Dustin Miller said. "Unfortunately, we still lost. We are looking forward to the next time we get to step on the court and get better."
Humboldt’s boys took a 55-49 win after rallying in the fourth quarter. The Cubs led 31-30 at halftime but the Eagles rallied for a 43-41 lead at the final break. Humboldt went on to outscore Uniontown in the fourth quarter, 14-6.
Ben George led Uniontown with 21 points while also hauling down 8 rebounds and blocking 4 shots. Jez Simpson added 17 points. Gavin Fry had 5 rebounds.
Humboldt also swept the games in the junior varsity division, taking the girls’ contest 37-23 and the boys’ 50-9.
In the other varsity games, Erie’s girls defeated Crest, 60-15, while Crest’s boys prevailed over Erie, 44-42.
Thursday night, Uniontown will face Erie while Crest takes on Humboldt. Friday night, the tournament concludes with Crest facing Uniontown and Humboldt vs. Erie.
