CHANUTE —Fort Scott’s Lauren Madison finished in third place here Monday in the 18-hole Chanute Invitational.

Many of the Southeast Kansas Leagues’s teams were present although this was not one of the designated tournaments. The third and final one will be held Tuesday at Pittsburg.

It was just the second 18-hole tourney of the season for Madison, who shot 51 on the front nine and 42 on the back for a total of 93. Her back nine was second-best to Pittsburg’s Samantha Maceli, who was the tournament champion with her score of 41-39—80. Pittsburg’s Jamie VanWyck was second at 44-44—88.

Kaitlyn Hanks was the only other Tiger entered. She shot 68-73—141.

Uniontown sent three members of its team. The best score came from Libby Franks, who shot 59-54—113, which was 30th on the 51-player field. Laryn Thompson followed at 55-59—114 and Aubry O’Neal shot 59-56—115.

Pittsburg won the team title with a score of 362 followed by three-time defending Class 3-2-1A State champion Caney Valley at 391 and Chanute with a score of 411.

Madison currently leads the SEK individual race with a total of 86 in the first two tournaments, both of which were eight-hole affairs. Maceli is second with 87 followed by Chanute’s Jerlyn Kustanborter with 92.

Should Madison hold on to her lead, she will become the first from Fort Scott to win an individual girls’ golf title. The last SEK champion of either gender from Fort Scott was Jonathan Allen, who won the second of back-to-back championships in the spring of 2014.

Pittsburg is the two-time defending team champion and leads Chanute by 39 strokes going into the league finale.
