Tigers split at Parsons in SEK finale
PARSONS -- Fort Scott High School's basketball teams split their final doubleheader of the regular season here Friday night. Tiger girls defeated Parsons 42-36 in Southeast Kansas League play while the boys lost 77-67.
Fort Scott's girls (6-6 SEK, 8-12 overall) saw Madison Cook go 8-for-8 at the free-throw line in the fourth quarter to help secure the win. The Tigers went ahead for good on Skyelar Brown's 3-point field goal with about a minute and a half remaining, which made it 37-34 at the time.
Cook led the Tigers with 20 points while Brown finished with nine. Only three players scored for Parsons (3-9, 5-15), two of whom fouled out. Nena Taylor finished with 25 points while Megan Hizey, one of those who fouled out, added 8, all in the first half.
Parsons boys (4-8, 9-11) pulled away in the second half, using an 8-0 burst early in the third period to turn a one-point advantage into a 40-33 lead. The Vikings also scored the last 9 points of the period to go up 54-43.
Jesse Jones scored 21 points for the Tigers (2-10, 5-15) while Grant Goldston added 14 and Jessie Lawrence and Ryan Thomas each added 12. DaVonte Yates led Parsons with 19 points followed by Jamarius Green with 18 and Brett Houk with 17.
Next for both Fort Scott teams is the Spring Hill Class 4A-Division I Sub-State Tournament. The seeding will be made official today but Spring Hill (11-9) will be the top seed on the boys' side and the only team with a winning record. The Broncos and Tigers will face off Thursday night as will Paola (9-10) and Louisburg (8-12) in a rematch of a game Paola won Friday night.
Paola (16-4) will be the top seed on the girls' side and will face Fort Scott at 6 p.m. Friday night. The other girls' first-round game pits Spring Hill (11-9) against Louisburg (10-10) at 7:30.
The championship games will be played a week from today.
