Seven Tigers medal at Paola

PAOLA -- Zarek Fewell, ranked No. 5 in Class 4A by the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association, finished in second place at 152 pounds at a tournament here over the weekend.

Fewell, 14-3 on the season, won his first three matches before falling in the final to second-ranked Johnny Towbridge of Basehor-Linwood by a score of 10-5. Fewell pinned Eudora's Andre Whitson in the first round, won a 10-5 decision over Columbus' Kale Smith in the quarterfinals and pinned Frontenac's Jordan Ishimura in the semifinal. Ishimura had lost just one this season going into the semifinal. Ishimura also lost to Prairie View's Colton Rice in the third-place match and is 16-3 on the season.

Six other Tigers won medals, including two in one weight class, leading Fort Scott to a ninth-place finish in the 15-school field. The Tigers scored 66 points. Lawrence-Free State, ranked No. 8 in Class 6A, won the team title with 209 points followed by Basehor-Linwood, No. 8 in 4A, with 157. Regional host Frontenac was third with 155 points followed by Prairie View, which will also be at the Frontenac Regional, with 144.5.

Mannie Gonzalez placed third in the 126-pound bracket while Greg Lorenz finished seventh as an unattached wrestler, meaning his results did not count toward the Tigers' team total.

Gonzalez won his first-round match over Ty Judd of Basehor-Linwood, 6-3, then pinned Caleb Cline of Paola in the quarters. Isaiah Jacobs of Free State, who went on to win the bracket championship, pinned Gonzalez in the semifinals. Gonzales then defeated Karl Scholz of Atchison County and pinned Ethan Ewing of Wellington in the third-place match.

Lorenz lost his first round match to Ewing by a 3-0 score. He drew a bye in the first round of consolation, then pinned Atchison's Gavin Reband and Prairie View's Christian Sewell. He took a 9-4 decision over Ty Judd of Basehor-Linwood in the seventh-place match.

Ben Daniels was third at 220. He pinned Wellsville's Aaron Mosher in the first round and won a 3-2 decision over Columbus' Tucker Coble in the quarters. Nick Eddis of Lawrence-Free State pinned Daniels in the semifinals. Daniels then won a 6-1 decision over Ryan Hanshaw of Atchison County and took the third-place match over Wyaitt Cox-Haliburton of Prairie View, 5-3.

Chris Stell took fourth place at 138. He drew a first-round bye before Atchison County's Hunter Ostertag, who was undefeated for the season at that point before going on to lose by pin in the finals, took a 7-0 decision. Stell then won a 9-1 major decision over Kenny Hartzell of Topeka-Highland Park and a 4-1 decision over Tre Kline of Prairie View to reach the third-place match. There, Frontenac's Brenden Ishimura took an 8-6 decision.

Kyle Montojo finished fifth at 120. He pinned Colton Sholz of Atchison County int he first round. He was pinned by Riley McDaniel of Frontenac, who went on to win the bracket, in the quarters. Montojo then won over Joe Phillips of Basehor-Linwood by injury default. He was pinned by Eudora's Hagan Andrews in the consolation semifinal. He won a 11-10 decision in the fifth-place match over Atchison's Jayden Watkins.

Cole Hall finished sixth at 113 pounds. He was pinned by Paola's Micheal Searcy in the first round. In the consolation semifinal, he defeated Knowledge Vann of Topeka-Highland Park. Josh Cline of Paola pinned Hall in the fifth-place match.

Jacob Zubieta, wrestling in his first varsity tournament of the season, was 0-2 at 145. He was pinned in the first round by Prairie View's Gavin Cullor and lost a 5-2 decision to Columbus' Tyler Stice.

Logan Hall, also in his first varsity tourney of the year, was 0-2 at 160. He was pinned by Brandon Miekus of Frontenac, the top-ranked wrestler in this weight class in Class 4A. Miekus went on to win the bracket. Hall also was pinned by Andrew Bevis of Paola.

Corbin Shelden was 0-3 at 106 pounds. With only 10 wrestlers in the bracket, he drew a first-round bye. He was pinned by Lou Fincher of Free State in the quarterfinal round, then lost a 10-7 decision to Alberto Belmares of Kansas City-Sumner, and was pinned by Basehor's Drake Parkinson.

Thursday night, the Tigers host Frontenac and Uniontown in a non-league triangular at Memorial Hall. Action is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
