Fewell places second at Bonner Springs

BONNER SPRINGS -- Zarek Fewell finished second at 152 pounds here Saturday as Fort Scott High varsity wrestlers competed in the Dick Burns Mat Classic. As a team, the Tigers, who sent just six athletes, finished 12th out of 16 teams with 40 points.

Fewell, ranked No. 4 in Class 4A by the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association going into the tournament, drew a first-round bye. He then defeated Alex Moore of Pleasant Hill, Mo., 6-4, in the quarterfinals. In the semifinal round, Fewell defeated Gage Herron of Bonner Springs, ranked No. 6 in 4A, by a 6-4 score. In the championship match, Basehor-Linwood's Johnny Towbridge, ranked No. 2 in 4A and 17-1 on the season, won convincingly, 12-4.

Three other Tigers finished in seventh place. At 120, Kyle Montojo started his day by defeating Noah Herzberg of Class 6A Shawnee Mission Northwest, 16-13. In the quarterfinals, Jacob Fritz of Bonner Springs took an 8-7 win. Austin Miller of Olathe South won the next match, 8-2.

In the consolation semifinal, Montojo bounced back for a 13-8 win over C.J. Davis of Bellevue East, Neb. (wrestling unattached), and took the seventh-place match by a 13-3 win over Clayton Dillon of Bellevue East.

Chris Stell took an 8-0 win over Klayton Coffman of Bonner Springs (wrestling unattached) to begin his day in the 138-pound class. But Gabe Hodge of Pleasant Hill and Kaden Jacobson of Basehor-Linwood recorded pins over Stell in the next two matches.

In the consolation semifinal, Stell pinned Trevor Hand of Bonner Springs (wrestling unattached) in 54 seconds. In the seventh-place match, Stell pinned Paola's Brendon Ohlmeier.

Ben Daniels finished seventh at 220. He drew a first-round bye before getting pinned by Jacob Forlow of Lees Summit North, Mo., and Thomas Garcia of Basehor-Linwood.

In consolation, Daniels pinned J.J. Neal of Olathe South in 37 second and won the seventh-place match with a 5-4 decision over Thomas Eaton of Pleasant Hill.

Daevin Caldwell was 0-2 at 120 pounds. He was pinned in both his matches, first by Olathe South's Jace Koelzer, then by LSN's David Spiller.

Greg Lorenz wrestled unattached for the Tigers at 126. He was also 0-2. He lost on a technical fall to Tanner Hitchcock of Bonner Springs, who is ranked No. 1 in Class 4A, and to Davis by a 16-11 score.

(Note: "Wrestling unattached" indicates that the wrestler is an extra competitor from a given school entered in a bracket. He can place but his results do not count toward the team score.)

Bellevue East, a national power, was the team champion with 218 points followed by No. 7-ranked Basehor-Linwood with 198 and No. 1-ranked Bonner Springs with 194.

Friday and Saturday, the Tigers will compete at the Basehor-Linwood Bobcat Classic.
